Was hoping to hear something about our midfield but all I'm hearing is that it's not good enough. I'm not hearing plans to improve it. Are we seriously going to play this season with this midfield?

Nail on the head !

Our existing strikers will come into their own IF we can find a midfield general. None of our existing midfielders can hold the ball - they just get rid of it quick, usually to a marked forward.

A ball holding player would give forwards time to find space. At the moment we seem to be relying on Andersen's long balls.

I suspect that Flynn Downes was supposed to be that player but he went elsewhere. It is also unfortunate that Macca is injured, albeit not unexpected. I would be very surprised if we didn't have another midfielder by the end of the window, either permanent or on loan.

It always seemed to me our mis field last season was best when it included , Mc Arthur, and Gallagher. Now we cannot have both ,and McArthur , physically is not reliable any way. With Kouyate, allowed to go. And only his spot covered, we really need at least one more attack minded mid fielder, as we do need more fire power. If we could afford an out and out striker as well that’s a bonus, but at least one mid fielder with a goal threat is priority for me.

Well if SP and Dougie haven't brought in two central midfielders before the end of the window then it's going to be a very difficult first half of the season. Cannot rely on McArthur's fitness and Schlupp really isn't a first eleven starter. Luka, although he was okay on Friday, really doesn't cut it at this level anymore. Unless we're going to give Hughes a run of games.

Hughes is probably about our best other option, which isn't saying much. He's ok - but when he came on against Arsenal his first involvement was to be easily bundled off the ball. He's a little lightweight.
There's Reidewald - who funnily enough looked better in pre season and never really lets us down. Obviously not great either though - a forgotten man.

Bit of a digression, but I can understand why that can happen, and I'm reminded of an England-Wales match at Twickenham a few years ago. Courtney Lawes, 6 foot 8 inches and weighing over 18 stone came on as a substitute late in the game. The first time he got the ball, one of the Welsh backs wrenched it out of his hands and ran up the field to score the winning try.

Now back to Palace's mid-field.

We have signed Doucoure of course but just consider some of the other options in central midfield : Milivojevic, Riedewald, Schlupp, Hughes, McArthur (35 this year and injury prone).
Hardly players to strike the fear into the opposition !

I tried to put that game out of my mind. If I'm right it's the game England were comfortably winning but lost in the end to two sucker punch tries.

Buy Sarr - he's just scored the goal of the season for Watford.
Pulled the ball down on his instep, turned and hit a shot from his own half.
Incredible piece of skill.

Why is it that (wilf aside), that so many of the squad that have kept us in the premier league for so long are suddenly not good enough? It’s not like they are too old.

Far too many on here just want something to get hard about.

We were very reliant on experienced players playing in a way that was far from adventurous. We are now playing in a different manner.
Milivojevic does not contribute as he did, McArthur is now 35 and injury prone etc etc.
We have lost the energy and aggression of Gallagher in that midfield 'Engine room', Kouyate with that ability to break up the play, and of course as I have stated McArthur has his injury woes.
I really don't think that Hughes or Riedewald provide that PL quality and Clyne and Ward are hardly getting any younger.
Central strikers Mateta and Eduoard have averaged a goal every 5 games in the PL.
Patrick Vieira has commented that the squad needs more players.

Reliable source on twitter says we are looking at a wide player, good age and re-sale value that also has international experience. Apparently nothing imminent on MF or striker front yet.

We have a few wide players now, unless Pat is thinking about Wilf through the middle on a more permanent basis perhaps
