Would they have a picture of Billy and then not mention it in the programme notes

I believe so. Billy had been dead just over a year so they'd have had a whole season to deal with it. Also the death would not have had anything like the attention that it would today. Death was something that people didn't really talk about.

I think the picture could be one of Billy when he was a bit younger and thinner in the face than the one shown in the book. It would be good to see a picture of Dunn though.

The keeper in the programme I think is Ronald Dunn not Callender, who he replaced after his untimely death the year before.

From Roy Peskett's The Crystal Palace Story' (1969)

'Before the start of the 1932-33 season Palace lost a great and most popular player under extremely tragic circumstances. Billy Callender, perhaps the best goalkeeper who has ever played for the club, was found dead, hanging in the lonely, deserted ground. He had taken his life through grief at the loss of his beloved fiancee, a loss which finally proved too much of a burden to carry.

Callender was a most likeable character, and got on well with everybody, not the least the little bunch of us who used to play tennis at Thornton Heath Recreation Ground. often he would stop to talk and watch while faithfully wheeling his crippled fiance, Miss Eva Leslie, the daughter of a local music teacher, round the Rec. which he did at least once a day.

But the illness she bore bravely finally defeated her, and Bill was left alone. And not even the friendship of those that liked and admired him could sustain him. A week after reporting for training for the new season he found peace. He was only 26 years old and had played in 202 games for the club.'

Still favour Billy because of the hairline. It's all very interesting and still of course could be someone else entirely. Anyone got a picture of Beby?

I can remember my Dad saying how good a keeper he was. He was devoted to his fiancee and would past the time of day with the locals whilst they were out for a walk.It was a terrible shock when he took his life and everyone felt his anguish.

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................
