A game in the mid/late seventies at home to Newcastle on a freezing cold saturday afternoon.

A load of Geordies in black/white tartan kilts, hobnailed boots and no shirts gathered at the top of the holmesdale terrace.

Firstly they unleashed a torrent of p1ss down the steps then a few of our boys from the surrey street market took them on. It was fantastic to watch, a bit like the 300 spartans film.

Next police and horses came on the scene and both sides united to fight them off.

I can't remember the score... it must be in the archives, but I spent most of the match watching the fights, it was spellbinding.

If its the game i remember it was the last game of the season 81/82 and we lost 2-1. I remember a well known face at the time having a row with a geordie on the pitch at the end of the game and then a copper caught him and he got away only for a c*** of a steward to trip him up with a corner flag.

I've looked it up..... the game I was on about was 2nd December 1978 in the old 2nd division, this was our promotion season. It was absolutely freezing cold.

I think the geordies caused a lot of aggro wherever they went in those days, so not surprised it kicked off in the game you remember at the end of the season in 81/82.

These were the days when almost every week some oppo fans tried to take the Holmesdale.
As a 15-16 year old I used to stand in the middle at the top of the Hol with my silk scarves tied around my wrists and my 3 Palace embroided bagdes sewn in to my demim jacket I used to think I was so hard with my hobbnailed boots until I got a smack in the mouth by invading Tottenham thugs.
The year after I got done by a few Wet spam, Was indeed my initiation into the world of footie hooliganism, never got invloved again until I was much bigger lol

I remember Tottenham coming to Selhurst for a tuesday night match.

They were all over the Holmsdale and no one was really sure who was who. There were a lot more of them than us though!

I also remember a tuesday night against Millwall and the police had dogs by the turnstiles to get into the Holmesdale. One Millwall fan put his face right up to the police dog and snarled at it. The dog backed off!

On the way to Selhurst station after the game they put the windows in of nearly all the houses on Holmesdale Road from the ground down past the Clifton Arms.

It was exciting back then as a youngster, it would scare the sh1t out of me now.

I remember the day that happened, you came down to see me a HT at the front of the holmesdale telling a Tottenham spanked you and stole your scarf as a momento, I wonder if it is still up on his wall of stolen scarfs from the heady days!!!
