Yes I'm aware of the 'don't go back to former players, move on' brigade, however.... Now Southampton have signed Clyne and have Richardson as back up it leaves Butterfield as third choice and surplus to requirements. We don't have a proper back up to Ward, only Wright or Parr who can shift over, but Butterfield could be a good back up to Ward, he's experienced, at the wrong end of his career, cheap, know Freedman and loves the club. It makes sense, surely?

With respect, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Please God no.If this club is going to go forward you don't go back for players like Butters.

He'd be back up to Murray wouldn't he??

Rainham you haven't thought this through. We have Joel Ward now. We have Jonny Parr to cover if Joel Ward gets injured. Then we want to bring on the next crop of youngsters like Aaron Akaruka. Where do you think Danny will fit it exactly? Edited by PassDribbleShoot (21 Jul 2012 3.53pm)

I don't normally go in for the "nostalgic transfer suggestions", but I think Rainham Eagle has a point here. We do not have youngsters of sufficient quality to cover for Ward, but if we buy anyone too good they'll not be happy on the bench. Danny would be an excellent option from the bench and could even be thrown on as a 5th defender late on when we're level/one ahead and the other team's throwing everything at us. He'd also provide a morale boost for the fans. He was one of our most loyal players and I can't be the only one who would love to see him in the shirt again. Where do you think Danny will fit it exactly? Square peg, round hole. Also, who would you envisage being our wide midfielders in that circumstance? We need Parr on the left side of midfield, he's comfortably better than the other options. I've never heard if Aaron Akaruka, so it seems unlikely he's ready to play in our first team.

We have Kyle Da Silva and Kieron Cadogan. Plus others who can come in. In this new age of Financial Fair Play I would rather see wages going towards a front man not being wasted on a right back no matter how legendary he was for us.
