I thought it was 6

thought Billy Gilbert was 6 ?

Cannon made his debut in 1971 at right back, so I think he was number 2 then but switched to number 5 in about 73/74

Teejay,
31st March 1973.
Number 6 Centre Half marked Peter Osgood.
Cannon and Phillip scored we won 2-0.
Attendance 39,325.
We got relegated.Cannon played 3 games at number 6.

I remember that game - Iain Phillips goal was from about 35 yeards wasn't it?

enjoy (Phillips goal after 3.26)

Great memories - Jim Cannon's first game, Big Mal's first game and, as they said at the end, the first time Palace had beaten another London side at the top level in 31 attempts!
Also noticeable, the lack of present day theatrics by the players. Hard tackling was something that was accepted as part of the game then. Shame it's gone!

The crowd is outstanding, and especially with the penalty after 44 minutes it was clear when we came out after half-time the welcome would be pretty loud and not too friendly. Crystal Palace wanted to strike back, so that was all clear. This is a wonderful place to play football - Jurgen Klopp

Interesting to see Derek Possee's hand gesture to Ron Harris at 9.45 minutes in.

Cannon made his debut at 6.
He wore several numbers early in his career but as Teejay said it was 5.

Mabbutt started at 9 but mainly 10.

PS in those days a number usually went with a position.

Unlike AKINBADBUY 55.

He had a little "+" between the two 5s !

Er no - his debut was against Chelsea in March 1973 which we won 2-0 and he scored and got booked in the same game (I was there!). The match is on the Palace Big Match DVD -I'll check out which number he wore - frommemory number 5 - but I'll confirm later.

Supporting Crystal Palace since 19.45 on 29th August 1972 (approximately)!
