The history for the reason of the rivalry is not the 1976 cup match which is always trotted out as standard. It was certainly there at the August 1974 game at the Goldstone. That was the first time the clubs had met for 11 years and Palace had just dropped from the old 2nd Division to the 3rd.
One much more interesting theory is a turf war between small time gangsters from both areas dating from the 1920s, the decade the teams first played. Brighton races being one of the flash points.
Certainly a lot more interesting than the Mullery v Venables handbags affair in 1976.
The hatred started much before that in an interview between Mullery and Malcolm Allison on ITV's The Big Match in 1970........

Well Flyhomo,I know you were up early but not quite early enough,you beat us 7 days ago! Where have you been? We were gutted,but only for a day or two then we looked forward to watching some of our players on international duty,both U-21's and full. How about your lot? Oy Flymo you t*** , i take it you didnt come to our place last year then, have a look on Youtube of your girls smashing up our seats , I believe over 40 were done, and this year kicking down the doors to storm the Arthur  only to be confronted by adults that might fight back...biggest and quickest retreat since the dads army opening credits.... and blocking our toilets(admittedly probably tampons!...use the supplied bins next time)... I mean really , oh and dont forget the 100 odd cars your ruffty tuffty shirlies scratched on the way home! file them nails more!

As for the smashing up of the cars, I would've liked to have seen some of the locals around Norwood out at the time. You could bet your life they'd have run a mile if any of them saw what was going on. That's one place you don't go messing about with people's stuff.
