The game was called off when bits started flying off the roof. Wind and rain can be managed (hence the other games going ahead) so there was no reason to call it off earlier. So if they'd have called it off at midday due to wind & rain do you think people wouldnt be moaning now too?

The authorities felt there was a serious threat to safety/life when chimneys and roof tiles started coming off buildings nearer kick off. It pains me to say it but I think they made the right decision.

As I make my way back from Liverpool now, the match was called off by the old bill who had concerns about structural damage being caused to buildings around the ground. In the cab from the hotel to the ground the cab driver reckoned that Goodson park was protected by surrounding buildings so the game should go ahead, ironically it's was this same buildings that caused the game to be cancelled. As I make my way back from Liverpool now, the match was called off by the old bill who had concerns about structural damage being caused to buildings around the ground. In the cab from the hotel to the ground the cab driver reckoned that Goodson park was protected by surrounding buildings so the game should go ahead, ironically it's was this same buildings that caused the game to be cancelled.

It's gutting but when a chimney has come down and there's tiles coming off roofs and thousands of people in the streets around the ground, they have to put fans safety first. If somebody got hit and injured or worse then everybody would be outraged. It's not a decision they would have made lightly but unfortunately they didn't really have a choice in the end. Most of us who were on the coaches would have only made the second half even with a delayed kick off. Trees on M6 and a tree blocking the other road just as we found out it was off anyway. 11 long hours on the coaches, a total disaster. Everton away on a weeknight in February clearly wasn't the smartest fixture arrangement of the season, but that's British weather for you.

A mate of mine who was also on coach 5 (why was Hambo so quiet?) got this reply after complaining to them: Thank you for writing to Everton Football Club. Firstly, please allow me to take this opportunity to apologise to you for the obvious upset that you were caused on Wednesday night. The following statement was released that night on the Everton website explaining the decision to postpone the game: Adverse weather conditions hit Merseyside in the lead-up to kick-off and the Club took the decision to call the game off when it became apparent building damage surrounding the stadium was putting spectator safety at risk. Chief Executive Robert Elstone told evertonfc.com: "We were monitoring it minute by minute throughout the day. I kept in constant contact with the head of our safety team, David Lewis, regularly. "About 6.45pm everything was fine and then I was surprised to hear 10 minutes later that a chimney stack had come down leading into Goodison Road. Tiles were coming off the roof of the Winslow (pub) and at that point Goodison Road had to be shut for very obvious reasons. Goodison Road is clearly the busiest road pre-game and at five minutes to kick-off it would have been packed with fans. We couldn’t run the risk, obviously, of anything coming off the roofs on the Winslow or any of the houses and potentially causing a major injury or fatality." He went on to say "Apologies go out to the fans because some of them had a horrendous journey getting here. It says a lot about their dedication and my apologies go out to them but I’m sure all fans will understand the reasons why. We have to put fan safety at the top of every decision we make."
