I'd imagine so, didn't have floodlights installed till much later. Wasn't there a game agains Real Madrid to celebrate the installation?
I'm not that old and wasn't around then...

I saw my first Palace match at the tail end of 1956/57 season, and was a regular attendee of home matches thereafter until moving to N Yorkshire in the mid 1960`s.

There were , indeed, floodlit games at that time. The Madrid game was to celebrate the new lights mounted on 4 towers, one in each of the 4 corners of the ground.

The stanchions accommodating the old lights are still present on one side of the ground, on the roof of the main stand. There was a series of stanchions mirroring them along the other side where "The Arfur" now sits.

There was a competition in the 50`s (might have run into the early 60`s, though not sure) called " The Southern Professional Floodlight Cup". Palace reached the final of this in 1959, going down 1-2 to Arsenal at Selhurst.

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

Palace played midweek floodlit friendlies from 28.9.1953 (v Chelsea was the first game), with lights on those stanchions still embedded into the roof of the Main Stand, plus sort of extended street lights along the Park Road side, which Lankygit confirms.

The Madrid friendly (April 62) was the official opening of new lights which were on pylons at the ends of the ground, but in fact they were installed during the previous summer and the first game under those lights was v Notts County on 23.8.61.

I have attached a photo here of the Chelsea friendly which shows the lights on either side of the ground. And on the next message there's one from the Notts County game 8 years later.

Some of Palace's home games that season look like they were played 'under lights' but the following give the impression that these were not.
CP v Gillingham Wed 11th September k.o. 5.45pm
CP v Torquay Utd Wed 2nd October k.o. 5.15pm

There were also two Saturday games
CP v Brighton & Hove Alb Sat 23rd November k.o. 2.15pm
CP v Ip[swich Town FA Cup Sat 4th Jan k.o. 2.15pm.

I was at the Torquay game in October which I think ended in a draw. Not sure now but I think Mike Deacon scored for us.

As stated there were several floodlit fixtures before the second set were switched on with that epic match against Real Madrid in 1962 3-4 to Real.
I recall the Arsenal match which was marked with the debut of Mel Charles, brother of the famous John, signed for £25.000 a record at the time

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................
