I can't remember where all the rest was posted so started a new thread. The BBC and ITV have now gone OTT and invited the Greens and the regional nutters too. 7 people on stage will be a pointless exercise. Well if the Greens weren't invited Dave was going to take his oval Rugga shaped ball away ...basically because the Tories have the BBC (which is actually right of centre and not left wing) the Sun, The Daily Mail, the Telegraph and the Daily Express, the Tories worry that a real live shot of posh boy will be hammered by Ed Miliband who while admittedly a geek can actually debate very well. The Tory papers can't control that so they don't want it to happen.
Milliband gets a bloody nose every Wednesday lunchtime at PMQ's, and can't even eat a bacon sarnie without looking a tw@t. Anyone of the party leaders involved in this debate would relish taking on Milliband who lost a straight fight with Mylene Klass on TV recently..... FFS.

Although I don't think he should be massively, David Cameron is clearly concerned with facing EdM in the debates. And to be fair I can see why. Sometimes on PMQs Cameron tears him a new ar$ehole. Probably more often than not. But on a very significant minority of occasions at PMQs, Cameron ends up looking like a tool and EdM wipes the floor with him. At the moment, Cameron looks more statemanlike and Ed looks like a joke. But it is a significant risk to him appearing in the debates that either a) he comes across as a bully which he has a tendancy to do or b) he does lose out genuinely to EdM if it is just one of those days. So he has a lot more to lose. The BBC has moved further right than it used to be - because it relies on good relationships with the government of the day - but anyone that doesn't recognise it is primarily left of centre is deluding themselves. But that does contrast with the majority of the print media which is overwhelmingly right wing. On top of that he has to face "man of the people" Nigel Farage in at least two debates. In all honesty Cameron would probably be a fool to agree under any circumstances. Edited by OknotOK (03 Feb 2015 10.35am)

This isn't necessarily a bad thing though, we presume that there is a relationship between oratory, debate and sophistry and being a good politician, but its actually bollocks. Politicians have gotten away with this since Socrates; the idea that sounding and looking capable are the same as being capable. Being right, is better than winning. Its easy to win an argument, its much harder to be right.

Actually that's exactly what debates in politics really are, winning buy echoing popularist nonsense and appealing to camera and crowd. Its as old as philosophy, the gulf between sophistry, oratory and philosophy. Politics isn't about being right, its about being popular and 'giving the people' what they want, or selling them the idea. It doesn't generally involve being right, or accountable for being right. Indeed, politics isn't about being right, its about sounding right.
