Well they're being packed off abroad to stay with their grand parents and we have the opportunity of two weeks together somewhere. I really can't think what or where to go. She doesn't like the heat too much and I'm not keen on long haul. Any suggestions? It will be mid August .

what's your budget?

A road trip around the UK is superb
Done this in the past with Mrs TUX and had a great time. Half of the time we'd never know where we'd end up and that was the fun of it. We'd find a nice place and stay for a couple of days then throw another dart at the map and move on.

Give it a go.

Andalusia. Almeria is great place for a cheap break.

Southern Germany.

Lots of interest, very clean, and very few tourists.

Virtually undiscovered.

Butlins. Minehead.

Leave it out Gusset..its gotta be Butlins ,Bognor, a much better type of chav.

Can you get decent scrumpy near bognor? No.

When I was there (Portishead - All Tommorows Parties) they were serving snakebites. You know it's a classy joint when you get a snakebite in a plastic glass.

Kent coastline from Rye in the south (I know it's in East Sussex) round to Folkestone, Dover, Walmer, Deal, Sandwich, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Whitstable, Faversham to the Isle of Sheppey. You will always encounter the unexpected and it's wonderful in places. On our doorstep too!

Thanks for all your advice.

I'm thinking taking car to Santander via ferry and doing a road trip around the area and back up through France via Andorra and possibly Provence but could be a bit far?

Budget of £2,000?
Anyone recommend places to visit or stop that they have been to?

Preferred not England or Wales but West coast of Scotland and Ireland a possibility?

Try to catch a fiesta in one of the smaller towns in the Basque Country and Cadaques on the French/Spain border - med side - is well worth a one night stop on the way to Perpignan which is also not a disappointment.

Best time for Scotland West Coast and Isles is June or September. Midges and tourists rule the place in August.

James...great trip that.

The boat down is ok,cabins are small but hey they have a shower and a kharsie, food on there is a bit pricey tho.

Either get a return on the boat and stay along the Northern Spanish coast, less driving back home, get along to La Coruna in Galicia, stopping off along the way it is nothing like the Spain we all know, very green not so hot but it will be busy as your talking about August, prime time and more expensive.

If not, the drive back through Andorra and the Pyrenees is good.go via San Sebastion great city.Into France Biarritz is very pricey but lovely keep going up the coast towards Bordeaux/Cognac see if you can vist any vineyards but they may be closed as its August..so many more places on the way up to see.

Wish I was going...pics of the Mrs please and then I will decide...

Kefalonia/skiathos/santorini

All beautiful Greek Islands.

Kefalonia probably my favourite of the lot, top half of the island tho, less built up.

North of Spain is indeed a good idea. I would prefer it over Andalucia and the Greek islands for the month of August if I wanted to avoid very hot weather.

In France, Provence will be beautiful and very romantic, too. Towns like Avignon, Aix and Chateauneuf du Pape (yes, the wine region) are wonderful and within easy driving distances from one another. From there, you can drive down to Marseille, around which there are two gems called Cassis (very pretty sea that sneaks into hidden valleys) and Bandol (posibly world's best rose wines). 10-12 days or so should be enough for all of this without rushing things too much.

I also recommend north of Turkey. Very scenic high plateaus full of traditional cabins and authentic experiences (food, people and tea are to die for in that region). Extremely green - forest, fog, hiking, mountains sort of thing. This is a cheap option even if you go for the boutique hotel options in the area.

And finally, although this may be a bit more expensive, Swiss landscapes are beautiful throughout the year and the weather is quite refreshing during the summer, too. This may exceed your budget a bit, but a trip that follows the route Zurich - Basel - Geneva - Locarno - Lugano would not disappoint and end at a high with a beautiful (yet admittedly very posh) lakeside promenade.

What part of "she doesn't like the heat too much" didn't you understand?

The Greek Islands in August can touch 40 degrees and it doesn't get much below 30 at night either
