Besides he's being buried in the wrong place.

It's slightly annoying that history is being treated as a money grab.

Ahhhh maybe you are on to the real reason there?!

Bury the sodding child murderer in York.

Leicester made a big play for R3 to be interred there as a tourist magnet. York already has enough attractions so let the upcoming Championship football city have him to regenerate the place. It has been steadily going downhill - W**kers crisps are cr*p too!!!!

In a modern sense I agree......But...It's just historically wrong to have the Yorkist king buried there.

Everything in its place.

The events today were probably inspired by the Richard III Society. Personally, what I've read about Richard III suggests he was a potentially great king-his name was blackened by the Tudor dynasty's spin doctors, Shakespeare among them. Henry VII killed many more rivals than Richard apparently, and the Richard III Society are convinced Richard was not behind the princes' murders. The book "The Daugher of Time" deals with the debate really well.
What struck me as weird was the involvement of a Sikh & Muslim section to the ceremonies and a woman priest at one point- all very modern England, but, if the ceremony was meant to be for Richard in some way, he would have found it completely alien to his own ideas and beliefs-something to be avoided in funerals/commemorations don't you think?

It is indeed all very modern England. But the ceremony was also very much we are Leicester. There has been huge pressure for them to give him up to York or Westminster. So this is Leicester making their mark and rightly so. As an SE19 boy who has now lived in Leicester for 25 years I hope I carry some balance of bias. And well happy that Leicester are going down even if they have king...

At least they did give him the full pre-Reformation Catholic rites, which is what he would have had if he had been buried properly at the time of his death.

I think it would have been fine for Sikhs, Muslims and women priests to be present, but I hope they didn't actually take part in the service!

It's true about the Princes in the Tower, I believe some evidence came to light years ago that implied that Richard had them placed in the Tower for their own safety from the Tudor factions that were trying to take the Crown.

Still think they should have taken him home to York though.

Why do they keep trying to alter history?

When I was at school he was represented as a very evil man.

Now he's being painted in a very different light.

Boadicea is now pronounced "Boodicker" and Marathons are now Snickers!

Is it just me, or is this NEW funeral absolutely absurd in its scale and cost?

Tens of thousands turning out, people throwing flowers in front of the hearse for FFS...really?!

Meanwhile there are real events of consequence happening...just me?

That's exactly what I said when I saw the news. Some people are bizarre. I didn't get the Diana hysteria but at least people sort of knew her through the media. Richard Turd died 530 years ago.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I don't think it had anything to do with Diana type hysteria - more a sort of protest at his burial in Leicester.

They were very specifically throwing white roses - the symbol of the House of York, to which Richard belonged.
