Private Eye commenting on the previous leaders debate -

Quote
The papers were quick to react to the party leaders' televised election debate," the BBC website reported. Just so. By 8pm, early copies of some front pages were being beamed over to the BBC News Channel and printed out for its paper review later that evening.

The Sun reported viewers' damning "verdict" on Ed Miliband's performance under the leadline "Oops! I Just Lost My Election", while the Daily Express summarised the debate thus: "Cool Cameron on top, but Farage keeps up fight on EU and migrants."

Which showed commendable clairvoyance; both these first editions came through before the live debate had even begun.

Of course the Mirror and Guardian wouldn't resort to this sort of thing in the same way they claimed they weren't hacking people's phones when the NoW got caught doing it..................

The OP didn't say "RIGHT WING press coverage of the election" and has just quoted the Private Eye story.

What it does help to demonstrate is the ridiculous entrenched positions taken up by the newspapers that are then being communicated to the public. The debates (and the campaign as a whole) aren't really shaping the political atmosphere, they are just reinforcing it.

The polls aren't moving. Telegraph readers will say Ed Miliband lost the debate last night. Guardian ones will say he won.

This. I saw the Private Eye story and is was interesting and telling enough to post. I purposefully made the thread title open ended so that people could post anything of relevance.

People on here always excuse misgivings of left or right based on 'the other guys are doing it'. 'The other guy's are doing it' isn't a way to solve or address anything though of course.

Agreed...but for most of us voters that's what politics has been boiled down to...bickering and mudslinging no wonder kids are turned off from voting.

I don't know, did they (the mirror is a s**trag anyhow), but were they published before the debate?

Hacking phones etc is generally ok if the story merits that kind of activity in actual journalism, rather than just doing it to see if you can get a story.

It's true. I spoke to one young relative who in part shared that view. He pointed out that most of your successes and failures in life have little to do with who's in power anyway, so there's no point getting too worked up about it.

Adapting to change is vitally important, more so than throwing your toys out of the pram because everything isn't exactly how you want it. Politics in this country has solely become about pointing the finger.

Entrenched partisan politics fuelled by those who have a vested interest. The sooner people realise that they are being used and manipulated for the benefit of others the better and we all disengage from the process as it stands now, we might find we get some politicians and politics worth voting for.

Someone actually told me they were voting for 'the lesser of two evils' the other day - so its come to that, voting for an 'evil' that's slightly worse than the other.

Everyone is always voting for the lesser of two evils, that's what democracy is, that's not unique to Britain. Or anywhere else for that matter, yeah there are problems with first past the post, but the apathy people feel is summed up by the fact that no one voted on the AV refurendum. I feel apathetic, but people's lives aren't bad enough for anyone to do anything about it. On the whole we are in a fairly good place as a country. Most people are full and warm so it bubbles on, doesn't matter who is in charge if it's one of the big parties because it's all pretty much the same sh*t.

Of course im playing Devils advocate here, but you see my point, no one cares enough because politics is so far removed. I like to consider myself interested and hungry for knowledge, but the language used in politics already created a gap. I went to a state school and never really learned about politics, no one really does except those who end up being politicians.

How can people possibly generate change if they have no way in to that world. I think the bullsh*t citizen classes I did when I was 16 was a waste of time, young people should be learning about what things mean for them. You get a group of people who hear the world deficit and don't even know what it means, they think debt. It's pretty much another language and leads to scaremongering and people not knowing what the problems are and just having a bunch of posh w*nkers telling them that X, Y or Z are the root cause of the problems so vote for this colour.

It's all a crock of sh*t essentially, so I do get the apathy.

Wind your neck in...... the Private Eye cited The Sun and Daily Express only.

I merely pointed out the obvious that they are all at it.
