The modern political take on The Police Force, sorry Service, is seemingly to turn it into a copy of Haringey Social Services.

I thought it was one of our aims to get everyone to speak English as a prerequisite of living here anyway? The idea being that they will integrate with society much better and not wish to live in a ghetto style commune with others they can communicate with in their own language and remain isolated.

In which case the need for multilingual police officers will soon be redundant if that policy is enforced and people learn the mother tongue.

On a practical level, the chances of one police officer speaking one extra language meeting up with a suspect that speaks that extra language will be pretty slim anyway.

I can see that a police officer with additional language skills could be helpful but to exclude everyone without language skills is unfair and short sighted quite frankly.

Even where people have learned English, I suspect many would prefer to be interviewed in their first language as their vocabulary and understanding of terms probably wouldn't be good.

Also people tend to lie about how good their language is, and of course speak in a non-common language to obfuscate what they are saying.

And its much more convenient than trying to get a translator on the weekend.

Our language skills in this country are very poor. Most other countries the majority of the population speak two or three languages.

When they are being interviewed They still have to have a translator present even if the officer speaks the same language to answer for the suspect and make sure they understand.

PC - (in non English) Did you do it?
Suspect - NO (in none English)
PC He said - He is guilty sarg

Don't think it would stand up in court.

Nothing new. Officers based in Glasgow have had to be bi-lingual for decades now.

This country becomes more and more pathetic by the year.

The PC crap, the junk food, obesity, the compo culture, gutter journalism, aggressive capitalism, etc, exported to the UK from the good ole US of A.

We must have had one serious identity crisis for quite a while now. Why we had to look West rather than closer to home for consumer culture influence and what is considered 'right and wrong' is confounding. Suppose it was all shiny and nicely packaged and difficult to resist.

Yep, just a trial and an attempt to make the police appear more friendly and inclusive.....

.....and an excuse for some frothing at the mouth from some.

The 'one month' addition was added the next day in a very minor release after the 'Met' received criticism.

Friendly and inclusive my arse....It's discrimination against one group to say they won't get a job if they apply.

Wanting recruits with second languages is one thing....Going about it like this is plain stupid.
