The details of Milly Dowler's suffering. A very difficult read indeed and not a link to be clicked on lightly.
Death sentence - too quick, too easy.Not allowed anyway. Hard Labour for 35 years until he is too old to move? Not allowed too, unfortunately.

Horrendous episode, hopefully the family can find some peace. I don't believe in the death penalty for anyone. A whole life sentence is correct. It should be a hard life without any perks etc, just a very basic life. I suspect though it will not be that way.

Not much you can say really, he'll spend the rest of his life in maximum security prison, probably in Wakefield - Which is regarded as 'the worst place in the UK prison system'.

How do you cope with hearing that about your child? Losing a child is as bad as it gets but learning of such suffering must tear you apart. Personally, I do think a death sentence is appropriate in cases like this. It doesn't bring the victim back but it just feels wrong that the killer gets to live on. An sadly he'll probably hav some life comforts that he just doesn't deserve.

I think maybe there is a case to be made where you have situations as extreme as this, where you have a convicted serial killer multiple different offences, across a period of time. Problem is there are so few of them, the cost and effort of getting an execution would be pointless (in the US it can take 12-20 years to get a person from death row into the execution chamber - and the cost is monumental in terms of appeals, reviews, judicial fairness etc). Although I'd suggest that rather than be executed, such people are organ harvested.

My first reaction to the details made public was that they should not have been. Think if it were my daughter I would not want to know - or have published - the details of her torture and death. He must be in virtual solitary as suspect even many sex offenders would find him abhorrent and if on a normal wing he would probably have been crippled by now. The fact he - apparently - not even been kettled suggest he is kept well away from other prisoners.

Whole life tariff in general population in some festering Victorian s***ehole is about the best you will get. I cant even begin to understand how as a parent you would get over something like that happen to one of your children

I kind of agree, that his confession to a crime he had already been convicted of, and already had a whole life tariff levelled on him, seems pointless and only served the media sensationalism machine. I think its pretty clear that her last hours on earth were horrific, brutal and cruel. The only upside, is that now he can't appeal the conviction. He has been attacked in prison, because he sued HMP for negligence in relation to it. He was shiv'd, sadly only suffering minor wounds, none of which turned septic. Police also reckon he was involved in other unsolved murders and attacks on women, going back as far as the early 90s. Edited by jamiemartin721 (11 Feb 2016 12.17pm)
