I suspect Erdogan's dreams have been answered by this (whether he knew in advance or not),quite possibly removing the barriers to his wish to turn the presidency into a more executive one,and to further attack any voices of dissent, political and media.

By saturday afternoon, hundreds of judges had been "suspended".Seems an unlikely thing to have time to get around to if a coup attempt had come from the army (not the judges) out of the blue only the night before

It's a sad affair. Now he's talking about bringing back the death penalty. I pray that doesn't happen, but then who can tell.

I feel sorry for the soldiers who were likely just following the orders of their superiors, take your tank here and and hold this road etc.
Most of them when they realized what was going on, gave themselves up, yet they are being treated as traitors.

The more i read about the goings on, the more i believe Erdagon at the very least knew of the coup before it happened, and maybe even was behind it himself, just like a hollywood movie.

Either way, is now fully in charge of Turkey, will have dictator like power as president, will get 98% of the vote in 3 years time, and then abolish elections altogether.

I think this is a good summing up. His plan for what to do in this scenario was so thorough and very much something he wanted to bring about, and so you have to wonder if they knew this was coming or encouraged it.

I read those stories too, about soliders being told 'go and guard this bridge'. You even saw some waving at cameras thinking crowds were cheering just as they were trying to string them up. Lots of them clearly didn't know what the f*** was going on and were just following orders. Poor b******s.

15,000 educators have now been suspended, apparently they have ties to Gulen....

This brings the total to:

6,000 military arrested.
9,000 police officers fired.
3,000 judges suspended
15,000 educators suspended.

They have also banned religious funerals for any of the perps.

I wonder if the public is now regretting stopping those tanks.

Just shows how corrupting absolute power can be.

Beginning to look like the failure of the coup is the saddest part of this story.

And some Brexiteers were thinking/had been manipulated into thinking that Turkey would be joining the EU in the next couple of years or so.

That was way, way off by a few decades a month ago and now even it's even further away from that. We'll all have received our birthdy telegrams from The Queen/King before it happens.

Yes but if there is an exodus from Turkey now, they won't be coming to Britain once we leave.

They wouldn't anyway. How many Syrians who need help a lot more than the Turks have made it over here and a safe haven so far since war broke out there over 5 years ago? The channel confounded Hitler too.

Also, net migration to the UK: the majority of it is from non-EU countries. You know - Africa and Asia and maybe South America. That'll be hitting 300,000 before 2025 even with Brexit the way things stand.

I see a very right wing government being elected if that is the case.

I agree. The political door is ajar and opportunity knocks. Oswald Mosley #2
