We show astonishing naivety at times. A new manager comes in, working with a group of players he barely knows and declares that he is going to play 3-4-3, a system that half his team are not used to. A tactically aware opposition manager sees this, drills his team to press high and nullify any attempts to build from the back. Why telegraph it? Why give them a chance to prepare (which they clearly did - very well).

And having done all this, where was plan B? Allardyce, Pulis and even Pardew always had a plan B. But FdB stuck doggedly to a system that wasn't working. That for me was the biggest concern - a failure to react to what is in front of him.

Either the players will adapt to the system, or we'll buy reinforcements, or the system will change, but our squad is good enough to stay well clear of relegation trouble.

One of these will have to happen and can.

I feel I have only just got over the result at the weekend. I have don't know if I have felt that angry about a first half performance since we have been back in the premier league. Perhaps the Sunderland performance edges it. Although we had Allardyce in charge and I had every faith he would turn it around.

I can understand Huddersfield coming out hard and fast from the start, as they having nothing to lose and they will surprise others, not just us.

I just can't understand why we weren't putting in a similar shift? We have players still fighting for places and potentially their place at the club. RLC and TFM were our best two players which sends out huge warnings about where we may be going. They are only loans and whether you agree or not, they honestly won't care come May 2018.

I am really trying to not be one of those guys who is suggesting we are done and FDB was a poor choice, no plan B and poor tactics. In reality though, we did have no plan B and the tactics were wrong and he just didn't change it. I couldn't get Tomkins coming on? Then the third went in.

No new GK, ST, RWB or Winger made us look very, very poor. Clearly the club are trying to sign new players but it seems we are at a stand still.

The system doesn't suit the best player in the premier league in the air, Benteke.

I fear for us next week. He has to go back to 433 or 4231 or it could be massacre up at Anfield.

Trying to keep positive but all the signs of poor planning, ability to change a system early enough to stop defeat and a lack of pre season were obvious on Saturday.

He needs time and he needs financial backing from Parish. I can understand a lot of posters concerns but I think hold total judgement until after the Swansea game or maybe even the Southampton game.

Remember, we are Crystal Palace and we have no devine right to finish top 10 like people suggest. Huddersfield deserved it and fair play to them. Learn and move on. We will be better.

Who said that?

I was worried about him coming. I am worried about managers prioritizing a system over the players they have in squad, I am worried about "Dutch possession and control attitude" (and believe me I know all about it) and I am worried about him underestimating the PL.
Now I see it all harshly confirmed on day 1 and I am worried some more. It does not mean I write him off but if the attitude is system over results, or system over "what suits the players in the squad" I won't take too long to judge. I am not one to allow time, sorry. We need to stay up and get points sooner rather then later.

We have a manager who won 4 successive Eredivisie titles with Ajax.
They have a manager who had never previously managed a first team before he came to Huddersfield although he had worked as a coach with Klopp and Rangnick.

So are you saying he is/cant be a good manager?

It seemed pretty clear to me that he had underestimated the PL and the opposition. Perhaps he was using it as an opportunity to experiment, in which case one hopes he will not do so against the bin dippers. But if he was serious about this is the way he wants to play from right now - three at the back, wing backs without the required pace and skill, centre backs without the required experience and composure, midfielders out of position and forwards isolated - then he is Pardew in disguise.

He may be able to play that kind of game at Palace one day, maybe even later this season, but right now it is suicide.

It really is far too early to judge. If the board took a month to appoint FDB then it's pretty clear they'll buy into his vision 100%, and I do expect him to be backed in the next two weeks. We've always done our business late since SP took over, and there's still a lot of deals that will be done.

I think Huddersfield looked a lot more prepared than us, they made their signings early this Summer and their manager had them very well drilled into a system he knows works for them. When Huddersfield were making those signings we didn't even have a manager, it's understandable that they looked more prepared than us.

It's a long old season though, there's 37 games left and plenty of time to get things right. We took 3 points from our opening 10 games in 13/14 and finished 11th. The meltdown on here and in the stands over one (admittedly very bad) result is mind boggling.

On reflection the result Saturday, could be a blessing in disguise. If we had won, due to Huddersfield being poor, we would of carried on playing in this fashion.
It was a quick lesson to de Boer what the Premier is about, we have plenty of time to address the situation.
It is obvious a few players aren't comfortable playing with the ball, Dann was an embarrassment trying to pass the ball, how much is he being paid? I can only think Puncheon must be awesome on the training pitch, as it can be the only reason he is in the team, done nothing for 15 months.
37 games to go.

The next game will show us how good FDB is, and how much he understands premier league footy.

If I'm to be honest, it wasn't the system that works me the most. The thing that worries me the most was the switching of players' positions, as well as the bizarre decision de Boer made: No Townsend or Tomkins? Very odd I though. The decision to bring on another defender when we were 2-0 down? Strange.

I really want FdB to be a success but I have to agree. Surely you have to assess your squad before deciding on the tactics. Most managers would want their team to play like Barcelona but most realise quite quickly that their players are just not good enough.

British defenders are not overly comfortable with the ball (e.g Dann) so why play a system where he is being asked to play with it a lot more? Palace have 2 international wingers so why not play both? Why play a wing back (a pivotal role in this system)who has barely featured in any of the pre season games and is clearly not equipped for the role?

FdB was told that money would be tight so he must have known the additions would be limited so surely assessing the squad was his main priority. I think he has used the loan system really well, but that is a sign that Parish is trying to limit the spending so there will be no Sakho signings etc. Chelsea went out and bought Alonso and Luiz so the manager could play his preferred formation and also converted Moses. Frank will need to get the best out of Townsend and make a quick decision on Punch (who is not up to standard), and work out where best to play Loftus Road if this formation is to have a chance of success.

I would love to see Palace play more football but too often I've seen us try and play possession football, struggle with any penetration and then finally hoof it forward anyway. Unfortunately I can see the same happening here
