Well spotted Tom. It was the 1930's not '50's.

Whatever happened to those nice well-groomed teddy boys of the 50's?

Did their drape jackets hide a variety of weapons including razors? You wouldn't hang around to find out......

I wouldn't say things have got worse in the last 50 years than the preceding 50 when it comes to overall violence in Europe, would you?

Oh so only 50 years ago then. 1967 blimey.

Comparing society today to the past is laughable.
The streets are far more lawless with violence than any time in recent history. Murder is common place. It barely makes te local paper.

Er aren't you comparing society today with the past?

McVeigh wasn't acting on behalf of a group, but he was from that American anti state mindset.

Who are these groups that are attacking and killing people?

Why aren't they being prosecuted?

Behalf of s apecific group, he and his companions were well known among circles that held very similar views - Which is consistent with how terrorist cells tend to operate. They're rarely directly acting on behalf of a political movement or group, but utilise a 'cell of one' approach.

Same way that Sinn Fein wasn't the IRA...

Same way that Satan isn't the Devil? They were the same - led by the odious Gerry Adams and the even more odious Martin McGuiness.

Pretty much.

That said, in this case, it is a Muslim immigrant, from Bangladesh, claiming the action in the name of ISIS

No, I'm saying there is no reasonable comparison.

I think the 'cell of one' lone wolf in terms of the extent of his actions is a fair way to view McVeigh. He had support for his views but what he did was far in excess of common. It's a troubling case once it's looked into.

However, people make these claims that the far right in America are a bigger threat, due to death count, than Islamism.

I certainly agree that the far right mistrust of the government and gun culture goes to troubling extremes in America with incidents like Waco saw an explosion in them and today's rise in identity politics is producing the same as a response.

However, these issues are apples and oranges in their aims So if this point is going to be raised in response to these problems I was looking for a proper examination of them..

You aren't answering the honestly put question.

While McVeigh wasn't working with any group, despite people constantly feeling the need to connect him I agree his actions fit the definition of terrorism as they were ideologically driven.

If you or others are going to equate these American far right groups with Islamic terrorists, despite the group size realities, then I'll actually like to know if this is a valid comparison.

Yesterday's bomber - like the bike trail guy earlier in the year - were inspired by IS, not working with a group. I posit that McVeigh being on the gun show circuit - and you have to see one of those to believe it - and being indoctrinated through contacts who introduced to things like "The Turner Diaries", is very much akin to being inspired by IS over the internet.

I don't disagree, he was apart of that environment.

However if McVeigh had wanted to join a specific group and be apart of its community he could have done that.

I mean he could have....but I think in his case it was his personality allied to that historically American anti state nationalism that led to his particular attack. If this movement are full of McVeighs looking to attack the 'man and women on the street' for ideologically far right reasons...where are the McVeighs after him?

If we compare that situation to this guy yesterday....is it an honest comparison to McVeigh to say that this guy could have successfully have joined IS, still remained in America and then been able to carry out his attack?

The support base isn't there on the ground, the hiding places aren't there at the same levels. These guys don't really have the same options as someone like McVeigh had.

Islamism and the far right in America are two very different entities with very different realities on the ground and different aims.

Not that this makes any difference to the victims of them. However, I think there is a reason why I'm not worried about redneck second amendment adherents.....I stand in opposition to them but they aren't a problem for me and a threat to any future I can see.

They are a cultural problem that requires a rebuilding of trust in some places and containment in others.

But then you're basing your conclusion on a comparison.
