Displeasure with the EU was even accepted within the remain camp itself and many remain red wall voters would have voted Johnson simply out of annoyance with Labour not accepting and moving on....ironically something that is in large part down to people like Starmer. People of every side voted leave, but more mps on the CONservative side did compared to the labour side I would imagine- and my experience is that more CONservatives I know voted brexit than non CONservatives- just my experience.

I think perhaps you are guilty of a couple of things here, first it is to attach voting leave, which essentially half the country did to someone being at either end of the political spectrum....as those at the ends of left and right are significant minorities.....even if the progressives are over represented in institutions in respect to their actual numbers within society. What is defined as 'intelligent' often seems to fit particular biases and as I come from an educated field I suggest what you are really referring to is more class.....which in this era (but not in others) favours social liberals....what kind of kills this idea as in other eras this educated class weren't majority social liberals.....so this more pertains to whatever political culture is favoured at that time. Secondly, there are highly intelligent people in every political field, regardless of how left or right, authoritarian or libertarian. The average IQ of the voting class under them matters far less than their numbers.

I will make my case in the fact that a significant % of leave voters had no idea what they were voting for or why. Many voted as a protest against the tories or austerity or to stem the flow of non EU migrants 9r other stuff that had nothing whatever to do with leave. There were Lso those who actually believed the side of the bus promise and objected to the EU contribution ignoring the fact that every club requires a sub.

Well, that's pretty much every vote ever.....most voting is politically tribal and in some cases ethnically. Most of us, and indeed the political class know...because it would have been researched, that the biggest factor behind the leave vote was immigration. It's certainly true that other factors were in there but those anti EU 'Corbyn' types, similar to the Whig libertarians 'Daniel Hannan' types on the right are quite small in number. There are some excellent books on the 2016 referendum. I listened to 'All Out War' by Tim Shipman on audiobook and can highly recommend it.....it's very balanced and objective and represents both sides and details what was happening behind the scenes.
