As many thought, the Chelsea transfer ban turned out to be a blessing. Fat Frank not so useless then....

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I find myself a bit conflicted on this one - At the time I felt that they gave FL the job because with the transfer embargo no senior tried & tested manager would take it (knowing that they couldn't buy players to encourage better results) so one FL was in the chair he really only had one option, to play players already on the payroll (including the academy) if mainstream payers were injured, suspended, not playing well etc - so how much credit FL deserves seems a bit debateable in so much as (at least from the outside) it seems that he had little choice.

The new guy Tuchel, now he has some silverware in the cabinet, could be seen to be safe in his position at the moment (or as safe as any senior manager is at a club like that) does have the benefit of being able to use the example of playing the academy being as how they can see clearly that if its done sensibly it can work & its a whole lot cheaper than buying every new player at 30 / 40 / 50+ million -

For me I see 2 big questions going forward -
How the owner will fare with the latest Russia Vs Ukraine situation + how Chelsea react to finishing the season some 20 odd points behind the eventual PL winners.

I think this is key. Their youth are the best around, and could probably put out 2 PL teams that could be competitive.

Youth though can blow hot and cold, and if you want to win the league you cant really afford to drop many points. Previously they have always had the cash to just buy in the finished article

In one way though it was an easy decision for FL, he had no choice would he have been so brave if he could sign players? Also if there was no transfer embargo would he have got the job?

I always felt it was a smart move by Chelsea to bring in a popular stop gap manager until the ban was over as no top flight coach would take a job without being able to sign players.

Anyway we can speculate the fact is FL gave the youngsters a chance and many of them have done well.

At the time I felt that what was "telling" was that as soon as the embargo was over they spent a shedload of money ( £200 Million?) on new players, fired FL & brought in a seasoned manager-

This kind of signalled to me at the time that nothing had changed, buy to succeed -

Maybe now some water is under the bridge perhaps they have had time to reflect on the previous experience of the previous couple of seasons & can see some benefits to a more measured approach, bring some through the youth system & buy some,

rather than an all or nothing approach.

If Chelsea have financial problems because of the Russian situation i think it is more likely, some of Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Kovacic, Werner, Alonso and even Lukaku are likely to leave and Gallagher, Gilmour and Broja join the squad next season
