She (Ruth) was born in 1918 - the youngest of Alexander Duckham's 5 children - and died probably 20 years ago (time flies and one loses track of how quickly so). You are spot on regarding South London. She once told me about, as a child, watching her top-hatted father walk down the hill towards Maze Hill station to catch a train to London. It wasn't until I looked it up much more recently that I realised that she was referring to their family home Vanbrugh Castle next to the Royal Observatory! My in-laws only knew her 'post-inheritance' when she had a flat in South Ken or Putney and a cottage in the Cotswolds.
