Southampton seemed to have so much promise a few years back. I remember the big clubs came in for some players, still I'm surprised to see them down at the very bottom.

Their board sold their best players assuming they would be replaced by the youth team or bargain buys. It worked for a couple of years but youth players tend to be generational e.g. Zaha and Mitchell and it is harder and harder to pick up a bargain player as they are so well researched these days by every club. Their model is not sustainable and is based on luck to some extent which has now run out.

In the old First Division, Billy McNeil managed Man City and then Aston Villa in 1986/87 and both were relegated. In 1987/88, 'Harry' Bassett left Watford while bottom of Division 1 and then became manager of Sheffield United towards the bottom of Division 2. Both clubs were relegated, but at least Harry then had the consolation of watching his previous club Wimbledon winning the FA Cup! He left the Dons at the end of the previous season because he felt he had taken them as far as it was possible to go. Oops!!

Nathan Tella has impressed me in the colours of Burnley, carrying a genuine attacking threat going forward with his great pace and energy and his directness running with the ball. But the Prem is so Elite that you need to be buying in the talent from abroad- or from the best of the Championship. Clubs need to be ruthless and only appoint the very best players. Not being loyal to 'your boys' who are home-grown. Southampton seem to have learned this the hard way.
