We beat Wimbledon 4-3 at Selhurst in October 1990. I'm pretty sure this was also the game when John Salako had to replace the injured Nigel Martyn in goal.

I'm sure you are right about Salako. The game took place just as The Sun revealed that Justin Fashanu was gay. Consequently his brother John, playing for Wimbledon, got tons of "banter" from the Palace crowd.

If we're thinking of the same game, it was in the old first division (now premier league) early in the 89/90 season if memory serves. Wright and Bright got a brace apiece, the latter getting his first top flight goals that day, including a cracking winner. The details are wedged in my mind because I was at the beginning of my Palace supporting life where you take all these things in on a deeper level. It was considered a bit of a mini classic I think, as Palace soon started selling commemorative VHS video tapes of the game in the club shop. I know because I had one, and nearly wore it out I watched it so often.

It was our first season in the top flight under Coppell. Many will remember that we recovered from an early 9-0 mauling at Liverpool to reach the cup final at their expense (another 4-3) but what is less often mentioned is that (I'm pretty sure) we did the home and away double over all three south London local rivals that season.

It'll be a fair while before us, Millwall, Charlton and Wimbledon will all be in the top flight together for us to repeat that little feat.

If I've misremembered any of this then apologies!

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but wasn't this the game where Terry Hurlock was sent off (possibly it was a second booking) for doing a bit of 'goalkeeping' to stop a Palace goal? I recall watching from the Whitehorse terrace as he handled the ball in the Holmesdale goal, hence off he went.

no, the Salako in goal was the next season (Aug 91) - we won 3-2 after being 1 down and with Martyn sent off. Luckily Phelan handled a goal bound shot and was also sent off just before halftime to even up the numbers.

The 4-3 was just after Justin Fashanu came out, so the sympathetic crowd gave his brother loads of abuse. He did score twice that day, so maybe we should have kept quiet.
