Your Thoughts?

Mine are too many in April and May,not spread out enough through the year

Very disruptive at times more about consumerism

Sometimes the ones in April are even earlier when Easter is in March.

I agree that they should spread them out more but then again I’m from the school of thought that thinks we should all have 6 weeks holiday and at least one bank holiday every month!

Although, as a retiree, Bank Holidays don't mean as much to me as they used to, May has always felt overloaded. Of course, this year we have an extra day because Charles gets a new crown, but that feels unnecessary really, bearing in mind the weak state of the economy.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Interesting, then, that a representative of the retail and hospitality sectors just said on a radio news bulletin that the three May bank holidays are expected to boost sales significantly - even beyond their current strong level. Don't believe everything you hear on the BBC, Old Geezer!

Anyway, I work a 4-day shift pattern and never work Sundays or Mondays, so bank holiday Mondays are irrelevant to me. With Waitrose and Screwfix always open, I'm happy!

May day is the one to move.

It was never a holiday in this country until the seventies, we should move it to October to space it out. I don't care if they call it Trafalgar Day or Woke Day or Check Your White Privilege day or whatever.

Ah yes YT; good for the hospitality sector maybe, but what about the folk who make and do stuff? People are still grumbling that we haven't caught up from lockdown.

Anyway, I avoid the BBC these days. More a GBNews kinda guy.

It was hospitality and retail. Two of our largest and most important sectors. But yes - the hospitality sector that the media continually portrays as 'up against the wall' whereas the reality is often somewhat different.

Though only formalised as a bank holiday in the 70s May day is an important Pagan festival to celebrate Baltane and the crowning of the May queen and the slaying of the Jack (Green man) to help fertilise the soil for the upcoming year. So my vote is for moving the one at the end.

Or better still add a new one in for June 21st and one in July

In 1978 in fact. Also in that year, Boxing Day became a bank holiday in Scotland.

Until 1974, New Year's Day wasn't a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but it was in Scotland.

Try telling that to kids today - Boxing Day or New Year's Day not being a holiday!
