In 1968, the first man to run the 100m in under 10 seconds, repeating the feat on winning the gold medal in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. His world record lasted for 15 years.

He's finally been outrun by the Grim Reaper, aged 76.

No doubt the best sprinter of his generation but to put the 'world record ' into perspective every running event up to and including the 400m came with a world record ,
The high altitude of Mexico City also saw world records at Long jump ,Bob Beamons 8.9 M record lasted 22 years ,and tripple jump .

The middle and long distance events where a nightmare ,especially for athletes from sea level countries and led to the birth of training at altitude for those looking for an edge .
