Oh ok... So we're in a position where we can spend £20m on a back up keeper.. Sure that makes sense. We have more than one keeper by the way.

A back up keeper? Do you watch football?

100% Correct. We are about to sign one of the best keepers in the country who is a major step up on SJ and people are moaning. I’ve no words to describe the carry on by some.

I think the reason many of us are unhappy is that if we have money to buy Henderson, surely it would have been better spent on a striker. Sheffield united (FFS) have just spend 18m on an England under-21 striker who had a good season loan in the Championship last year. That or a right-back would surely be a greater priority than a moderate improvement (possibly) in our goal keeper.

Yeah. Poor ol Dazza has seen more flak than a Lancaster bomber.

To my mind it’s a toss up between a goalkeeper and a goalscorer as to the most important position in the team.
One keeps them out the other puts them in , which after all is the aim of the game.
I take a view that Leicester largely went down last season by persisting for so long with Ward in goal, who patently wasn’t good enough.
The uncertainty that spread across the Leicester defence was palpable.
It would be foolhardy to go in for the rest of the season with Matthews as the reserve keeper.
We need two good keepers at the club who can both play in the first team if required if one or other is unavailable or out of form.
Henderson is in his mid twenties and could have a really good career with Palace if you look longer term and I think if we do get him it could be part of a longer term strategy.
It doesn’t mean we don’t need to strengthen in other positions but , as previously stated, goalkeeper is an absolutely a crucial position where you don’t want to be taking risks.

You make some good points. I would add that Pickford at Everton compared with Meslier at Leicester was the reason the latter went down.
However, I'm not sure that we can justify two fringe-international goalies without European games. One of them is going to be pissed - and Henderson has recently experienced that at United. We have survived with a fag-end-of-career Speroni, MvCarthy and Hennessey as first choice. I'd say Johnstone is better than any of them
If the rumours of Johnstone wanting to leave are true that also seems strange. Why did this not come up much earlier in the window and couldn't Guaita then have been assured he would be first choice for another year?

I usually agree with a lot of what you write Eddie, however how do you validate that comparison of the two keepers based on their previous performances. If Henderson was that good he would be number one at Utd but he isn’t even close hence why he wants to leave. Johnstone is a good solid keeper and more than capable of being a PL number one.

One of the primary reasons for this transfer being put forward is that we want top level competition. If that’s the case and the rumours are true that Johnstone will be moved on once Henderson joins, then we need to buy two keepers because nobody thinks Matthews is a good enough second choice. It all seems like a lot of effort for a minor improvement in a position where we are not really struggling. Iverson would have been a perfectly good number 2 keeper and we would have had a lot of money to spend elsewhere.

They relied upon the old saying - ignorance is bliss. The Dazza species is now extinct as far as I can tell. He’s been exposed more times than Neil shipperley. It’s a poor showing to the HOL as far as I’m concerned that a thread has been specifically created to facilitate this unhelpful nonsense.

And for the groupies - take some of your own advice and ignore!

Well said, couldn’t agree more!

I imagine (believe or not) that the blades need is even greater than ours.
