I am going to put a tin hat on for this, but I am not convinced Maupay is as bad as his stats look for last season and Everton don't seem that bothered for him. There we go, that's me attempting a football opinion that I'll probably regret.

I can see where you're coming from but see him more as a hold up man , rather than goal scorer. Someone who could hold up the ball would be good for us - but they would need to have people to give the ball to. Eze is all we have right now. We need to get wide players with some goals in them or it's going to be another season of us being goal shy. Eze could score ten but I don't see anyone else capable of it in our side - until Olise is fit and if he's still here.

We lost out, possibly through our neglect, the best qualified striker around.

How did we let Coventry sell Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon for under £20 million ?

Anybody comparable will cost 3 times that - unless, of course, Dougie Freedman is keeping his cards very close to his chest and will spring on us a stunning surprise.

But his record on Glen Murray replacements has so far not been good - so it definitely WILL be a surprise ....

That's what the Everton hierarchy told themselves about his spell at Brighton. How did that work out for them?

I dunno, I felt like Everton thought his stats at Brighton and Brentford were good but he just didn't suit their style of play. As someone else has pointed out, he might not suit ours either, but I feel like his spell at Everton has belied his ability a bit and that his value ought to have dropped.

With regards to Glenn Murray (someone else mentioned) Freedman ought to have spent the last five years building a time machine...

He did, but when they used the time machine to go to the future it became embedded in the structure of the New Main Stand.

Fox in the box. Good movement and can get on the end of crosses/moves. A Morrison/Murray type. We have enough quality to get the ball in the right areas, just need someone to stick in the onion bag more regularly.

Trouble is, no idea who that is, and if I did, they would likely cost £50m+ if they're good enough for the Prem and have a few years in the tank.

historically a good palace striker comes along by luck about once every 10 years.

by my reconing we are almost due one now…wouldnt it be nice if a clinton morrison with more work ethic & less arm waving at team-mates came thru the academy for diddily squat.

Sounds like Kyogo Furuhashi to me! I know he plays for Celtic and Edouard hasn’t set the heather on fire but this kid has great movement and an eye for goal! He’ll score goals in the Champions League this season and be sold in January probably. Brendan brought Edouard to Celtic. Wonder if he’d take him back in a swap deal!?

I’d go with a fox in the box type striker. How many times over the last few years have we all held our heads in our hands because a great cross is delivered and there’s no one even near it instinctively making that run. I appreciate it’s only the very best strikers that have that 6th sense to just know when to dart in for the tap in but they are out there.

My generation learnt that skill from spending hours and hours on playing fields in the 70’s when there were no screens. We played volleys and headers and other similar games where we just taught ourselves about movement and where the ball was likely to be played. You can’t teach that.

If only we could get a player that could set the SPL and the Championship alight.

We play with inverted wingers!

We already have three 20+ goal strikers at our club in these leagues. Ayew, Edouard, Mateta. The issue isn’t personnel, the issues are chances created in the box for a player attacking the 6yd box. How we set up and how we look to control space is the issue not the personnel. We could bring in a 40mil striker and not much will change.

I agree with this. Our setup doesn’t suit a 20+ goals no.9. Maybe Franca will play up top eventually.
