A long article from the BBC website. There may be some clues here why we are so bad (seemingly) at getting deals done:

I didn't find the article particularly illuminating.

Just remind yourself that we have been in the Premier League for more than a decade - and longish shots to get relegated this season. That is not based on having massive revenues; directors willing to shell out big bucks; an amazing flow of Academy products or having elite managers. That pretty much just leaves good transfer dealings as the main cause, to my way of thinking

Or luck mixed with serendipity

Parish has said before that there is a pecking order and unfortunately we just have to wait for other clubs to move their pieces around the board then we see where we lie.

For me a lot of the issue is with fans just wanting us to sign anyone at all for the sake of it. Have a look at the garbage being touted around in the media and by other on here, but our fans would jump at them just because they get a bit of excitement.

There is no doubt we will sign a couple of players this window and it wont be the likes of Demarai Gray.

But we aren't trying to compete with the big boys in bringing in new players so the pecking order analogy only applies if we are after one of the big boys players that they no longer want

I do hope that you are right

Aren’t we?
We might be having discussions but players not committing as they hope for a better offer.
Just because conversations aren’t public doesn’t mean they’re not happening

Whatever the 'art' is, I suggest that Brighton are far more talented at it than we are.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

What art?

In most negotiations one side is keener on the deal that the other. I read that article a few days ago one of the "experts" said he lets the selling club know that they have other targets and can move on, hardly a revelation.

One more point

This is much of the issue I'm sure. Every player is assessing his options as we would asses new companies to join.

If there is a chance of a better job, better city, better league, more money they aren't going to take the first offer that comes in.

We've demonstrated the 'art' of transfer dealings with Johnstone, Guiata, Anderson, Guehi, Doucoure, Lerma, Olise and Eze.
Notice the exclusion?
Yes, no strikers in that list.
In fairness, it's probably the most difficult position to fill.
However, we were reputedly in for both Watkins and Toney but were unwilling to cough up - and for much lower fees than they would command now.
We need to demonstrate the 'art' of getting a striker and if he works out hope he can remain for a season or two brfore being snapped up.

Spot on.

I wonder at the value of having a dedicated 'Transfer Talk' heading. The number of words contributed to it since its inception would, if stood on end, reach from Selhurst to the moon. We almost never buy anyone...
