so the right choice against Wolves

I've seen Wolves twice this season. They will not be a pushover. They are closing down quickly, are aggressive in their play and in Cunha have a real threat up front.

I also think Mateta deserves a start on Sunday otherwise you disincentive players on the fringes.

However.. get him heading the ball more in practice and running to the back post in anticipation of crosses. He tends to get lost in the box. I’m not sure he’s got great game awareness including the ability to second guess where ball is going to land but you can’t really teach that. Hence get him running to back post in training where he has a better chance especially with his height and Wards overhit crosses.

His ability to strike the ball well in open play is undisputed.

A centre forward playing in the best league in the world that struggles with the basics of the game is not ideal, although we’ve bought a few like that in the past and probably will in the future so we might as well get used to it.

Unfortunately for Mateta heading is still allowed. And he doesn't do heading from what I have seen.

Completely agree.

I've always thought that (when watching JMP in real life) he like to shoot early, little flicked finishes etc. Which just isn't inline with our pedestrian build up.

Also not slagging off Olise, but a right footer on the right would be useful. Ayew cross to Edouard last night was almost a carbon copy of the Sheffield goal. Those crosses are soo hard to defend against

And it was a great finish

It's being reported that Mateta is bring offered a new contract by the club.
Perhaps it's to protect his value if we loan/sell him, but my brain hurts these days with the complexities of players' contracts.
The club and Mateta certainly didn't give the impression that Mateta would be departing in interviews after the Plymouth game

Hopefully based on goals scored.

FA Cup Goal against Millwall from the Olise cross was a decent finish.

A hat trick against Plymouth reserves seems to have convinced us we don’t need another forward and can invest the money we have more wisely in somewhere we desperately need cover…another goalkeeper !

Scored a header against Arsenal too did he not?

I want him to start on Sunday in place of Eduard and not just because he scored a hat-trick.

Woosnam from The Atletic is reporting that Palace are 'hopeful' of one more signing after Henderson.
This would be a forward with the preference that this would initially be a loan.
If this is the case I suspect it would either be the player from Leeds or the one from PSG.
As others have speculated the club may have made a calculation that we could spend a lot of money e.g on a striker, winger and full back, but it may only result of a jump in one or two places in the table.
Perhaps not viewed as commercially viable.

Jean-Philippe Mateta seems to be a player that needs through balls to play to his strengths and generally this has not been how Palace play. Against Plymouth two goal were through balls and he indicated where he wanted the ball played. The goals he scored in Germany were mainly through ball or chasing big balls out of defence. There is a good striker in there, I hope Palace can get the best out of him.
