At the risk of being accused of pedantry, female players are referred to as (and more importantly they refer to themselves as) 'women' and not 'ladies'. I think 'ladies' is seen as being rather outdated and patronising. Just saying!

I have, on occasions, been referred to as 'the gentlemen' in establishments etc. and this provokes an identity crisis for me. What's wrong with 'that bloke'? At least then I know I am the subject matter.

You, a pedant, shirley not Yes I get that. I'm in retail these days and regularly address my customers as 'Sir' or 'Madam'. Admittedly that doesn't really fit for 'younger' people, so I find other ways of addressing them. Just to be clear; I have no problem myself with "Ladies and Gentlemen". I was merely pointing out that football itself has rejected both of those words.
