I remember liking Garry Thompson, considering he had the awful task of replacing Ian Wright while he was injured he did okay. He didn’t score many, but he had a presence up front and put himself about. Made in Bromley

When I first started supporting Palace in 1973 as a young man recently arrived in South London and thought about the club's history and then saw us relegated to the 3rd Division, the Holy Grail for me and my mates was to see the club not only reach the top league but become a stable member of it, The team of the 80s and the brief Wright/Bright era were fun whilst they lasted BUT they didn't last.

This current run is beyond what I thought ever possible especially after our yo-yo trips between the Championship and the PL in the nineties and the noughties. And, as you say, given we were minutes away from oblivion, this current period in the PL is sustained success.

Yes it would be nice to win a major domestic cup and have a season or two in Europe and these are not unachievable but the idea of us becoming a regular Champions League team is stretching things somewhat given our size, resources and the uneven playing field we compete in with the mega English clubs.

I just missed the team of the 80’s but, supporting from the 90s, I often scoffed at the thought we’d stay up for more than one season if… if we got promoted. Memories of Hopkin and Shipperley (I was right behind the goal in Cardiff, row 3!!) were fantastic but you knew what was to follow. I maintain that the football fan should always want for more, that has to be the very nature of the affair. This current period is still beyond the wildest dreams I held as a youngster however and never lost on me. Losing an FA Cup final was disappointing but again, I thought it laughable to suggest I’d be there to see something like that at Wembley (Again, staring right back down the barrel at Punch as he hit it).
