I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Mel and his son at Saints’ dinner to mark the 40th anniversary of their FA Cup win in 1976. I joked with them about him being the ‘King of the back pass!’ It seemed to strike a chord as they both burst out laughing. It would probably also be fair to say that Jacko’s distribution was probably much better than Mel’s passing, particularly on a heavy Selhurst Park pitch. A lovely guy and a great servant to the club. RIP Mel

Great player,fond memories, modelled myself on him, never quite got there though as only managed Southern Sunday football league division 1 still we can all dream eh, Rip Mel

Was a big fan of Mel Blyth. I'm pretty sure I played against him on Purley Way one Sunday when he turned out for a Scarletts Night Club XI One of my early Palace heroes. RIP
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

RIP Mel You should have reminded him that if he hadn't nobbled Peter Taylor in the semi they would never had even got to the final let alone get to celebrate it 40 years later . That one act ruined anything he had done previously at Palace for me and I was one of those that booed him because of it when he returned to us at the end of his career .
And we still need a striker |

Great guy as well as a great footballer. Had numerous pints with him, Kember, Danny Light and Salako at our local village club. So many players we’ve lost in the last few years. RIP to them all. Its funny that whenever fans talk about ex players they have seen in the pub Steve Kember was always there , the guy must like a drink

If my memory serves me correct ?thought it was there full back who injured Taylor not Mel .Think he was there captain his name i forget

I watched him in many games. A wholehearted, no nonsense, honest player who you could reply on. Sobering thought though that he was younger than me! RiP a legend.

As far as I recall it was scumbag Peter Rodrigues who ran 25 yards to take Peter Taylor out off the ball. Mel remains one of my heroes. very sad.
