also, bravo to the chap above....it WAS Groucho Marx.

“First prize was a week in Philadelphia. Second prize was two weeks.”

There is also a story that Beecham, during the early 1900s, in the foyer of a Manchester hotel, saw a distinguished-looking woman that he thought he recognised but could not remember her name. He spoke to her and as he did so vaguely recollected that she had a brother. Hoping for a clue, he asked how her brother was and whether he was still working at the same job. 'Oh, he’s very well,' she answered, 'and still king.'

Interesting, the Reagan one I should have got. Plus had heard Jay Leno say that but couldn't remember.

2 is going to be Marx or Engels - presumably Marx. The others I've come across but it is no surprise that I can't remember - which goes back to no. 1.

Still, nice to see him get a mention. He was a remarkable man.

Indeed - basically discovered cells. And I believe 17th century which sounds recent but is quite old for science. I only remembered the name as I was watching a documentary on TV about Charles II and society.

He's well worth looking up - he was involved in many areas. If Newton hadn't taken against him he'd be much better known.

I think this has been said many times about many people including Harry Cohn The Head of Columbia pictures when 50,000 people turned up at his funeral. It was said you had to stand in line to hate him.

I could have barking up the wrong tree on that then.

Because the quote used the word 'person' I assumed that it wasn't specific.

No but I think it's one of those quotations that would be difficult to narrow down as it has been used so often in the past.

Continuing the capitalism/communism theme, this is a good one:

Under capitalism, man exploits man.
Under communism, it's just the opposite.
