Enoch Powell was undoubtedly an interesting man with many admirable qualities, especially in his early academic and military life.

The idea that his failure to attain the position of PM was the start of British decline is though risible. More like a bullet dodged. Even the Telegraph accused him of playing into the hands of the National Front and being a racist.

His attitude can though be heard today in the echo chambers of the right. If he was still with us he would no doubt be regularly to be seen on GBNews and being touted as the next leader of Reform and the man to “save” our country.

Other opinions exist:-

All I am saying is that only those who actually made the decision have all the information and know why it was made. If that’s their job then so long as the funder is happy we should let them do their job. There are far too many know it alls around. Especially if they allow themselves to be “informed” by the Daily Mail.

Do you think that if there were any hoped for extra benefit from this research that it might be mentioned anywhere?
The constant mantra that those in positions of authority are beyond criticism is curiously forgotten when it suits certain agendas.

Enoch Powell was right and is a hero.

Fifth columnists can go to hell.

I gave him due credit for that. He also stood up and argued against MPs who regarded Africans as sub human. As I said he was an interesting and highly intellectual man.

All that was praiseworthy. No hint of racism or fascism in his early life. It was only when her flipped and allowed political ambition to dominate his reasoning that he harnessed himself to the cause of stopping immigration into the UK, becoming populist and appealing to the likes of the National Front.

Which was a pity as far from making his political career, it finished it. He was no fool. He would have realised that the path we were on was inevitable and no number of emotional speeches was going to change that. Rather than fight against the inevitable it would have been much more productive to try to shape it and manage it, but he chose not to.

I expect that it is, in the files supporting the application. Not though available to us, or the Mail, who wouldn’t be interested anyway.

Those in authority are always subject to criticism. It’s more reasonable though when all the facts are known and they have had an opportunity to explain. Basing opinions solely on a report in a rag like the Mail does not meet that criteria.

"It depends on how you define the word 'racialist'. If you mean being conscious of the differences between men and nations, and from that, races, then we are all racialists. However, if you mean a man who despises a human being because he belongs to another race, or a man who believes that one race is inherently superior to another, then the answer is emphatically 'No'." And why do you expect it's there?

Where else would it be other than in the rationale behind the request defining the objectives and anticipated outcomes.

Not an answer. Why do you expect it exists?

I don’t but it appears you do.

I don’t know, because I haven’t seen the brief.

There must though be quite a lot more to this than is suggested by the Mail’s “anti-woke” story froth.

£800,000 is a lot of money for a 3 year research project which almost certainly will be primarily the responsibility of students, who are themselves paying for the privilege of taking part. Any University staff will be salaried. So the money is for additional costs. That’s a lot of airfares and accommodation!

I don’t know but instinctively my trust in the story is low. Something doesn’t add up. Maybe they got too many 0s in the total!
