Digging into the deepest recesses of my memory, I think I'm right in saying that the word was originally used in the phrase "handbags at dawn" - as in the old phrase "pistols at dawn" (when duels were traditionally conducted). But with increasing usage it just became "handbags".

And don't forget that Maggie Thatcher, when mocking one of the "wets" in her government, was occasionally described as giving them a "handbagging" - only, I suppose, because she took a handbag everywhere, even into the Commons.

There was also "handbags at ten paces".
Does it really matter? The players spend the entire game kicking a ball which I find deplorably misandrist.

Crikey, that's a new one on me. Are you setting up in competition with Willo?

Perish the thought. Willo's loquacity and circuitous peregrinations though the sesquipedalian hinterlands are too convoluted for a gobsh1te such as myself.

Makes you wonder if Mrs. Willo has ever enjoyed a "tongue lashing". On second thoughts, and moving swiftly on...

As a female fan I wouldn't use the expression myself. Having said that I don't find it particularly patronising - just a bit unimaginitive.

I think it's disappointing that, in order to mock a person, they should be compared to women or gay men.

Wrighty was my hero when I watched him in a Palace shirt from the Holmesdale end and he's just as much a hero to me now for his support for women's football.

I don't suppose he used the expression "handbags" as a slur towards women - it's just a common phrase that many people use without thinking.

If no malice was intended then I don't find it offensive or patronising.

Good for you for not being offended , a fresh change in this im so offended by everything in this world .

Spot-on.

Over the years I have been described in pejorative terms, often in a gruff manner, however it has been asserted that I have a hide akin to the underside of a pangolin and that I view such brickbats as a 'Badge of honour'.

Strange how Willo is now almost seen as an elder statesman and font of all wisdom. Time was when he was the subject of vitriol from all directions. What was his stepping stone to becoming our version of a ‘national treasure’?

Hell's Teeth

I am certainly "Elder" (71 this year) but certainly no "Statesman",furthermore, far from being a "Font of all wisdom" I do not possess the intellectual acuity of many on HOL.I am just a limited clunker who carries no aura.

In terms of "Natural Treasure", I suspect that over the years many on HOL had wished that I was dead and buried !

The usage of the term ’handbags’ relates to a confrontation which involves more posturing and pretentious behaviour than it does physical violence.

Physical violence can in extreme cases cause fatalities. The swinging of an everyday handbag does not however beyond any ludicrous hypothetical suggestion.

Hence when footballers are merely fronting one another as opposed to engaging in any sincere attempt at physical violence - handbags.

The fact some are so small minded and ignorant that they think only women can claim affiliation to the handbag is ridiculous. And are we talking about cis women here? Can these people define what a woman is? Is the handbag exclusive to one of only hundreds of genders?

A prime example of people, especially cis women, looking to deny the rights of, and discriminate against, those who have failed in every other avenue in life and are merely trying to exploit one last facet of modern lunacy to justify their their existence and get attention.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
