Really?

I grew up literally watching Dave Allen take the p1ss out of religion nearly every week during his series on the box.

The only taboo I remember on the telly was swearing and no one was arresting you for it.

No, today we have 'protected classes', and 'perception' of 'offence' which are bad laws and I will complain like feck about it every day of the week because these laws shouldn't exist.

I heard the other day that more people are arrested for what they say in this country than they are in Russia.

Sometimes I really do think you're guilty of the most vivid of rose tinted spectacles.

Plenty of censorship and as is pointed out above, taboos back in what you view as the heyday for all of humanity.

Some things were better, some were worse. I simply can't agree that everything was better as you often allude to.

This is all a very nice deflection from how awful Wolves were on Saturday.

One bloke in a crowd allegedly calls a player a rude name and it becomes headlines?

Give me a break. What a pathetic society we have become.

If your issue is with what the media report, fine. If your issue is actually about whether this guy should face consequences for his actions and the 'becomes headlines' is simply a veneer for that, then just say so.

I think so.

There's plenty of discussion to be had around the subject matter I'm sure, but there has been an alleged incident of racism at Palace.

If this is untrue, let it be known, reported, amended and apologies issued.

If it is, I genuinely pity the perpetrator and whatever is causing them to act as such but it's unwelcome in the ground for many of us as fans, we don't want it anywhere near our club and punishment/reaction should be appropriate to reflect that.

Spot on.

Veneer?

Do I usually use veneer?

The media attention is bonkers and the supposed seriousness of such an incident is ridiculous. It is also clearly selective.

I have made my opinions on racial insults versus any other insults clear in the past.

Race related zealotry is entirely political and commercial.

Veneer – yes.

So your issue is with the media, not whether the person in question should be held to account. Glad that's cleared up.

Your opinions that equate to all insults are the same is bizarre. Choice vs permanence, as above.

Are there other insults/abuses other than race that are worse than getting insulted for wearing a s*** fancy dress outfit? Sure. Should those have equal standing in the media? Probably. Are all types of abuse and insults on the same level?

Nope.

We literally have laws that mean people will be arrested for saying things that the Police consider offensive towards some 'protected' class. We literally saw a girl being arrested the other day...not for what was said online....but just for talking about someone looking like a lesbian.

No, we very much do not having things about right.

As an aside where are you getting the stats on the nature of Russian arrests

That's easy, I have none, but I did a quick google search and, though the news was western and thus suspect, there are innumerable references to arrests for anti war posts (both pacifist and ultra right nationalist).

Also, are you serious? Comparing us with Russia on free speech is ludicrous. We have gone a bit crap, but we would have to go some way to match Russian stats.

I think it's valid to criticise Russia obviously.

However, they aren't arresting you for offending some tart's sensibilities but rather protesting against their power and the government....which of course is insideous and wrong (as long as those protests are organic and not funded ops).

However, when people protested against covid in London did not Khan and Dick set the heavies on them?....but when BLM protested they got so far as writing insults on Churchill's statue and trying to set fire to the flag at the cenotaph.

I think perhaps your belief that we are far superior....and this is no defence of the authoritarianism in Russia.....I would say perhaps we are....but that 'how much' better, very much depends upon where you stand politically.

I've lived in both and I can be quite certain about it.

You may persist in thinking it's half a dozen of one and half a dozen of the other if you wish but I think it's you wearing the wonky glasses personally.

Subjective ultimately though, isn't it.

Although I would argue that every generation suffers from the same issue – it's a sort of infant/young adult bias concept. The average joe doesn't think too hard about adult realities between the ages of 0-16 (or later). I know a guy who waxes lyrical about the 70s. Delusional, when you actually look into what was happening back then. Inflation, high unemployment, poor living standards by todays comparison, regular power cuts, strikes, wars, states of emergency, I could definitely go on for several minutes. All he seems to remember was a couple of glorious hot summers. The human brain neve ceases to amaze

My generation will be guilty of it as well – but look back properly and you'll see that your rosy childhood memories were not taking into account everything else that was happening around you and need to be heavily revised.

Well, everything outside of atoms is subjective at some level. A murder is great for the murderer isn't it.....it's definitely true that the language and ideas between the left and right are becoming more and more distant.

As for me and many of us we know the eighties were fecking great mate.....when it comes to free expression....whether you were left or right or Boy George....I remember Quentin Crisp.

In fact the the social conservatism of the post war period up until Blair essentially protected this country from the weirdos and commies.....Even Blair didn't want them but what he did opened that door....just as he didn't want to break up the union but essentially ended up putting an eggtimer on it.

Today is sh1te.

The Seventies? We were in the common market then so imagine how terrible things could have been. That aside you're right that the memory of being a teenager with no responsibility and a pay packet makes things seem a lot better than they were. I suppose expectations were lower and we didn't know any different so were happier with our lot.
Great music though.

It's also not a stretch to consider this likely to be genuine based on more recent incidents, some clearly caught on camera.

Calm down.

Calm down? Dont be a div. Why would I care. You clearly seem to be getting your knickers in a twist over something you dont know all the facts about. Someone has said there was no racist abuse at all and the player in question may have mis heard/mis understood. I couldn't really care less either way.
People from all ethnic backgrounds are abused all the time. The 'desperate to be offended' brigade should maybe hold back the venom till the full facts are discovered. Personally, I dont think thats unreasonable (even though we do seem to be slipping toward a guilty until proven innocent policy in our society these days)
