Under Tory cund plans, if all students do not know their times tables on leaving primary school for 2 years in a row, a school can be forced into being an academy. How stupid! Whilst I acknowledge that rapid recall of multiplication facts is a good thing, there is no way on God's earth that all children are capable of learning them.

Would that be the same Nicky Morgan who couldn't answer a simple maths question asked of her by a mere stripling? [Link]

Morgan, return to schooling, you intellectual pygmy.

Excuse me if I've missed something but what is 'an Academy' and how does it differ from 'a School'?

"A parliamentary inquiry into the coalition’s education reforms has called on the government to stop exaggerating the success of academies and to be more open about how it runs the programme.

The report by the cross-party education select committee said that although it was clear that academisation led to greater competition which helped drive improvement in schools, there was not yet proof that academies raised standards either for disadvantaged children or overall.

.....

Academies and free schools are free from local council control and deal directly with Whitehall, with freedom over areas such as the curriculum and teachers’ pay."

Why not? We all did when I was at primary school - it was one of the basic foundation stones of our education!

Don't get me wrong, it's something that all teachers aim for. However, to expect all children to learn them is short sighted.
In all schools I've taught in there has been a wide range of abiliies in a class. With the best will in the world, there will always be one or two who for one reason or another won't manage it.
Morgan should know this, so to use it as a punitive way into forced academisation is clearly a political move.

And there will always been some kids, who however high achieving overall, will simply have a "blind spot" when it comes to tables.

My ex went to a secondary modern from primary school. In the remedial group in maths all the way through. Couldn't do all all her tables, still can't! Got good A levels and went to uni to study English and French, and later ended up with a masters degree too. But,under these new proposals her primary would be forced to become an academy?! Insane and pure ideological stuff dressed up as government policy.

Just out of curiosity what sort of percentage rate would you deem acceptable?

Above about 80 to 85 percent

So if a 80% target was offered by the government you would be quite happy with that figure? I have to agree 100% in any event is unachievable.

This may have an interesting effect.

Schools in the most impoverished areas will probably get hit hardest so in the end the average Academy will be a challenging school. I see no reason why the Academy system should be more efficient than a good LEA, they can't change the nature of the environment from which they draw their pupils.

This will become a political football when the Academies start to be seen to fail. Given the impossibility of schools in certain areas ever reaching targets that aren't truly relevant to them, inevitably they will fail. Either that or they will be better funded by the Government to avoid failure, in which case the playing field isn't level.
