We could argue all day about the refs decision, fact is the team put themselves in a position to allow the ref to decide their fate with their poor play the last 15.

I do have a soft spot for this American attitude to 'sports'.
We are always moaning on about "the referee!" "the lino!" "we had an injury!" but I think the American attitude is not to be so tolerant of excuses.
For instance, why wasn't it one of our forwards breaking into their box and forcing a desperate last ditch sliding tackle?
If we were doing that down their end we may have got a dodgy pen.
We were hostages to fortune in this game and exposed ourselves to the consequences of a ropey decision.
We have to be good enough to overcome the questionable decisions of the officials.

But even more infuriating for me was why on earth the penalty wasn't retaken??... The 19 for Villa was at least 3 yards or so into the area before the ball was kicked. You have to ask yourself why has this not been picked up by VAR??

[Link]

I was wrong earlier when I said the rules had changed . That came from being informed as such (by another ref) when I mentioned it during another game .

Anyway

Whats going on here is that the refs and linos are not penalising encroachment ,leaving such decisions up to VAR .
VAR instruction (see link) says they dont penalise encroachment unless player becomes directly involved in play

Incandescent with rage at surrendering all the points after being ahead until the 87th minute.

My dear wife and I are abroad and made a reservation for a meal but alas it is now cancelled as she does not wish to be in my company due to my foul mood.

Never mind Willo, my own dear wife has decided to go off and play golf all day tomorrow as she too knows my mood will not brighten up until later in the day tomorrow. In the meantime enjoy your holiday!

Oh dear Willo, you are going to have to make it up to the Memsaab, in a fashion, only you can conjure. As others, enjoy hollibobs.

I thought it was a decent performance under the circumstances, i thought the back four played well, Richards had a good game, Doucoure and Hughes were excellent, at the end of the day they tired, before they got the first i couldn't see the scoring, but with a smallish squad, having Olise, Franca, Guehi, Lerma and then losing Ayew was a big blow, even so i thought we deserved at least a point.

It’s a choker the way it ended, but I’m pleased that we put ourselves in with a chance of winning by having a bit of a go. We were competitive basically. I’ve hated those tergid away backs to the wall performances of the past when we just sit back watching the other team pass it around before they eventually break us down then it’s game over.

I can cope with a bit of poor defending, iffy decisions and late goals as long as we have a bloody go during games

I think solace can be taken in that we probably have exactly the number of points we might have expected after the games we have played.

Don't know about anybody else, but, i thought Ayew going off turned it Villa's way especially as Cash & McGinn exploited their left wing, our right, ie Wardy. It worked. Us going ahead so early in the 2nd half wasn't in the script, theirs & ours. Thought Richards played very well despite his 'jet-lag' coming back from the US.

Didn't think Eze was 'at it' today had a few good moments but, also had a few bad. Edouard took his goal well & is now on 5? Who'dve thought. Mateta is growing in confidence & at times looks a real threat, long may that continue. Ayew going off is a concern & how will Johnstone respond to treatment?

Also, don't forget we had a 'rookie' in the dugout, didn't do too bad imo. Some people are blaming(again) Mitchell for the 1st goal, maybe, but he didn't have any cover from Schlupp who i forgot was on the pitch. Doucoure does what he does & made a brilliant tackle/block. Hughes tired in second half but, was ok.

Anyhoo, that's just my opinion of the match.

They did say if we won it would’ve been our best ever premier league start!! Obviously football didn’t exist before the premier league when we had better starts in 1979 and 1991

My 5 thoughts on today’s loss
1) If Roy is on the touch line, we win this match.
2) Our squad depth is an issue, Ward at starting right back and Richards at back up center back will land us 14th.
3)Ayew’s grit was missed in the final 15
4) Eze wasn’t on the ball enough for me and when he was he was not as aggressive as I’d like.
5) Doucoure didn’t look himself with Lerma’s absence. Hughes had a good match but Cheick was sub par today.
