Until Benteke leaves Liverpool (or they announce he is staying) none of us know what will happen. We can all speculate its a dead deal or its still alive but patience is the only thing any of us can use right now.
Personally? I don't think the deal is dead but having said that I am not overly bothered whether we get him or not as long as we do sign a decent striker.

Yeah but not caring where you play is very different from being adamantly opposed to playing somewhere. Betting 30 million pounds on anyone is risky especially for us...I'd rather sign two strikers in the 10-15 million range who are interested in playing here.

I couldn't agree more. Benetke is never worth £30 mil anyway in my opinion

£30 million is last year's £20 million.

This year's £15 million is last year's £10 million.

So what could we get with the latter? Conor Wickham was in that bracket. Why? Because he played most of his Sunderland days on the left. Then when we got him he spent more time injured than available. Any other players might get 8 Prem goals or will not be proven in this league.

If we can afford the wages and the issues it may cause, we should buy. It is the wages that are a concern, not the transfer fee. He's 25 and is an asset that will always hold some value.

The costs associated with the acquisition of players' registrations are capitalised as intangible fixed assets in the club's balance sheet. The cost is then fully amortised (reduced) in equal annual instalments over the period of the player's contract because the player can walk away from the club on a free at the end of the contract in accordance with the Bosman ruling.

Benteke cost Liverpool £32.5m for a 5 year contract which equates to £6.5m per year. He has been with Liverpool for a year so his book value is now £26m. The longer he sits on the bench the lower his value will fall. I would guess that our opening bid of £27m was roughly based on his book value.

Which, of course, has sweet f*** all to do with how much a player will sell for. On that basis, Gayle sold for 10 times his 'book value; let's hope we don't pay that kind of multiple for Benteke eh?

What about players who sign 4 year contracts and are then sold for half of their value with 12 months left?

There are plenty of cases where the accounting principle did and didn't apply. It is a bidding market, just like an auction.

But of course book value is only for Financial Accounting. Fair market value is the real test surely? OK, you can sell at book value without making an accounting loss, even if it's a lower price than you originally paid. It may make it less painful to take a haircut but no club will sell for less than the true market value of the individual unless they are in real trouble.
