I am a little perplexed by 'those in authority' seeking to make the population takes sides in the conflict.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

The obvious solution is to give The Gaza Strip an entry to the Eurovision song contest. They can host it next year - it will be reminiscent of Liverpool. They can duke it out with Israel through song and shiny outfits.

The two nations at the time of WW2 were very different countries to now.....thanks to certain political directions. The 'special relationship' is essentially a client relationship where we do what America tell us to do....thanks to us losing our power due to the world wars...the second being the icing on the cake. They didn't even support us during the Falklands war and stayed neutral and that was even during the political love-in between Reagan and Thatcher. We followed them into any conflict that they desired help in....Apart from Wilson bucking the trend with Vietnam. Our relationship with America should be affected by its attitude towards us.....Biden has been very insulting to us and quite frankly we shouldn't just meekly take it. Like I say, we shouldn't work against America, but that doesn't mean we have to follow them down some decidedly ethically dodgey paths. Just my view. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Nov 2023 10.44pm) Yes, they stayed "neutral" but supplied us with critical equipment such as air to air missiles. The Argentine airforce took significant losses and could not stop our ships landing troops or supplying them. Biden appears to be out of touch with most things so we probably shouldn't take it too personally!

I believe also the use of the Ascension Island base for refuelling and resupply - which had used to be British previously. Britain got told by Chilean radar systems when Argentine planes took off, the US involved somehow there. Shame it didn't save the ships. At the time the US was expanding industry in Argentina and linked the currencies later.

The Americans, didn't supply us much, that we didn't already have, their ordinance was not compatible with ours, so therefore didn't work. The argies were supplied by the French, Super Entandes Aircraft & the Exsocet missile fired from their planes.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

As for Biden the US presidency is too important to just shrug off bad performance. He fecks up everything he touches.

We didn't need to ask permission. Edited by Stirlingsays (05 Nov 2023 9.02pm)

The Argentinian AF did sink some of our ships using French supplied aircraft and missiles causing significant casualties. It was therefore essential to maintain air cover for our ships and troops landing. As far as I'm aware, the US supplied some air to air sidewinder missiles for the RN Harriers. Those missiles were supposedly in short supply in UK ordinance at the time. I also read somewhere that there was a contingency plan to use a replacement carrier (USS Iwo Jima - the one that was scrapped in 1995) if one of ours was damaged. Fortunately, that situation did not arise.

Fortunately, that situation did not arise. From what I remember from the attitude the Americans were pursuing during that war.....negotiation and ceasefire.....I very much doubt that would have happened. This was no, 'our greatest ally' from them....all this 'special relationship' is more to satisfy the media. Reagan and Thatcher liked each other and that probably did more than anything else to ensure the cabinet didn't throw a wobble like Eden did. The only aspect where we are heavily involved in that sense is within the security and intelligence agencies. Agencies that can operate in some very underhand ways for various reasons and in some cases it's often arguable if the outcomes are always to the benefit of their nations (drugs and the CIA for example).....especially considering how much money is spent on them.
