Perhaps if Israel had responded with forensically targeted attacks on Hamas as the stick and offers of a new arrangement for self governance and support as the carrot they might be thanking them. Not now. They are cementing hatred and a desire for revenge in a new generation. They may destroy Hamas but they are creating an even bigger successor. Are the marches “pro-Hamas”? Or anti genocide? Good question. Judge them by their actions, as well as their words. [Tweet Link]

? The British run that island and still do, we have let the Americans use it when necessary. We didn't need to ask permission. Edited by Stirlingsays (05 Nov 2023 9.02pm) The US have the Naval Base there as far as I'm aware. There's a tiny British presence there. It used to be a British Navy Base that was handed to the US in the 40s/50s as far as I know. The islands are British territory. Britain has an airfield that the Americans and RAF use. I haven't been there though. My dad was navy 25 years. This is all off the top of my head so could be wrong.

Looking on its Wiki is says the island is the location of RAF Ascension Island, which is a Royal Air Force station, a European Space Agency rocket tracking station, a British-American signals intelligence facility and the BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station. That's present time though so I don't know about the past. I should imagine that the Americans have been allowed to use the island as is natural discourse between historically related nations. It's ours though. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Nov 2023 11.03am)

Looking deeper into, 'American base at Ascension Island' I found this. I think this is what was referred on the main page as the 'British-American signals intelligence facility', which seems to be what it's used for now. But between 1960 and 1961 it was used as an American armed forces base. Perhaps that's what your Dad was referencing. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Nov 2023 11.17am)

Plenty of EU countries keep their heads down as well and I don't blame them. I am sick of this country bringing back body bags from abroad in areas we should not be involved and then we get the inevitable thousands of refugees from those places and we are told we have a moral duty to them. How about we do what the rest of the world does, send some humanitarian aid but otherwise keep out of it. London has every variety of ethnicity. It goes beyond our imperial history, although that still feeds immigrants from many nations. No, pretty much any refugee will have some community in London and it is that which draws them, not our engagement in any war. You may be thinking Afghan translators etc. They are a pin prick in our immigrant numbers. On your central point, I do think it is about time we became Denmark. Or, better still, France. They have managed to avoid intervening everywhere like us. Other than minor skirmishes in e.g. Cote D'Ivoire (mainly foreign Legionnaires), the last time they sent home body bags was Algeria. Yet, they still have their permanent place on the Security Council and a voice in the world. This would require our walking away from under the US umbrella, something we seem wholly reluctant to do.
