Quote Part Time James at 17 Dec 2014 1.28pm

Everyone seems to begrudge bankers getting bonuses but they are happy to accept that when Scrooge pays off Bob Cratchit's mortgage using profits he's made from banking it's a happy ending. People are so fickle.

I wouldn't say everyone, I certainly don't anyway.

I never could understand how people complain about a service they didn't even pay for to begin with. I think we are one of the few countries in Europe that actually offers a free service.

No, not everyone, I was being light hearted. I think you are right. The banks have talked about charging here but they need to unite in bringing it in together or they'll obviously lose custom. It may still happen one day but I expect they'll include ways around it similar to existing reward or added value accounts (e.g.: pay X amount in each month and you don't have to pay).

So, people shouldn't complain about the global financial ruin they caused because they didn't charge us for it?

Eh?

I am talking about my experiences of working on the shop floor of a bank with people complaining about it, nothing more nothing less.

On a technicality, we as a society did pay for it as it was caused by toxic loans/mortgages...the interest is the charge. I also believe people who took loans knowing full well they could not afford them are as much to blame as the people who approved them. Greed is on both sides.

How much does your current account cost? Nothing. That was my point. If you pay nothing and don't like it, then go somewhere else if everywhere else is also charging nothing.

Right, ok, I'm with you. I never really hear any complaints about the service though. Tends to get pipped by bonuses and economic meltdown

Sorry I didn't make it clear my mistake, we were talking about working for the bank and the public perception.

Haha NatWest where I was working was always getting complaints about long queues and crap online banking etc.

Where I found working for a bank opened doors for me, it seems it could be the opposite now which is a shame really.

My Mrs is employed by Lloyds Banking Ltd.

She started work as a PA/Secretary for Clerical Medical who were bought by HBOS and then merged with Lloyds.

A banker she is not, and gets a very modest bonus in march of a few hundred pounds.

Her final salary pension has effectively been frozen as any future pay increases will now not count towards her final pension accrual....... tell that to the firemen, teachers and any other public sector worker moaning about their pension benefits!

She hasn't complained as she feels she is lucky to have a full time job.

So, because your Mrs puts up with it everybody else should? Weak.

Thank you Mr Troll!

The more I hear Brand talk, the more I have my reservations about his views. But the more I hear anyone else talk about Brand, the more I feel sympathy for him.

I'll give you an example. I watched him on Question Time, and I was pretty disappointed in his facile responses, which came across a bit like Owen Jones minus the factual basis. The only time I had any sympathy though was the moment he responded to the fella in the audience asking why he doesn't run for Parliament by saying he's fearful he'll become like them. Yet this was the point most analysts picked up on as being representative of his lack of conviction, resolution, whatever.

But to my mind, the concept that power corrupts was a refreshing one. Because ultimately it does. If you told Obama voters in 2008 that the quality of life for African-Americans would have worsened more under his administration than any modern-day President, they'd have laughed, but that's what happened. Similarly, tell a Lib Dem voter in 2010 that they'd be voting in a party responsible for some of the most Draconian welfare reforms in post-war Britain, they'd have rightly told you to f*ck off.

And before you jump up and say 'ah, but that's due to a number of structural reasons', that's sort of the point. We have supposedly democratic institutions in developed countries which are totally non-representative and which represent power structures beyond any individual or political party's control. If he stood for parliament he would achieve nothing because he could achieve practically nothing, and all he would achieve is satisfying his opponents' suspicions while conforming to their understanding of how social change should be enacted.

There are so many different things I disagree with Brand on but ultimately he attracts scorn from almost every sector of society I fundamentally disagree with, from Polly Toynbee and Johnny Rotten to the Murdoch press and most posters on here. And for that I can't help but be on his side.

If punk ever happened I'd be preaching the law, instead of listenin to Lydon lecture BBC4

Hopefully that's the end of the thread now it's been proved he's a complete bellend.

'Proved' by whom exactly? It's hardly a unanimous decision on this board let alone the 'survey' The Sun happily published.

It's been an interesting thread imo. If you don't like it then just..... maybe..... stop..... reading it?
