Over the past few months the mainstream media have been awash with stories of anti semitism whether in the Labour Party, on student campuses, or within the Muslim community. Although these stories have highlighted a number of incidents of real anti semitism many have conflated anti semitism and anti Zionism or equated criticism of Israel and activism for the Palestinians with anti semitic views.

These accusations are part of a systematic attempt to close down debate and to shield Israel from criticism and political action in response to its treatment of Palestinians.

Please follow this link to an excellent article by Ben White which exposes this agenda [Link]

If a right wing blog wrote an article defending islamophobia in the same manner that that blog appears to excuse anti semitism, you would be up in arms, denouncing the actions of the 'neo liberal elite'.

You don't half read some bollocks, Bertie.

As for the councillor - she should be prosecuted and jailed if she has broken any law and I hope she has.

I'm only reading this now. But Kermit, I'm embarrassed for you. This is a cringeworthy argument.

It looks far more like a Labour/left problem to me at the moment and Labour should address it.

That could be because you are viewing the matter through a partisan anti-left bias,Matthew.

Have a look at UKIP (the party you support,no?) before getting too smug in your self-righteousness about this being only a left problem. You support a party whose London Chairman was expelled from the party last month for an anti semitic utterance..

Or the former UKIP parliamentary candidate exposed in 2015 for being an anti semite

Or the UKIP candidate exposed in 2013 who said the second world war had been engineered by the jews (the same tosh that appears in the Hamas charter).

So no Tories then, which was my question.

UKIP has said it has a zero tolerance in such unacceptable behaviour and acts accordingly

[Link]

Your view seems to be, and this is a prevailing one on here from the lefties, that it doesn't really matter. UKIP are viewed as having anti Semites and therefore having a sizeable number in Labour doesn't matter. Well that is wrong. Labours attitude stinks over this issue and highlights one of Corbyn's major failings, which is to publicly denounce and expel those who spread this evil. I bet this doesn't sit comfortably with you but you, like the rest of pinkos on here, feel the need to defend it by attacking the opposition. That is weak and is unforgivable.

You're right it does stink. Of course Labour have always had these views but now they're becoming increasingly brazen about it.Jeremy Corbyn is very friendly with Palestinian terrorist groups so their attitude towards this comes as absolutely no surprise.

Matthew, try not to do knee jerk responses sometimes.

If you read my posts on this thread,I think a reasonable person might have a difficult time concluding I'm not highly critical of anti semitism where it appears on the left.

Thing is,I'm equally critical of it on the right. Why not? The post of mine earlier this evening you responded to was about how the ugly cancer of anti semitism appears to me to pop up at times across the whole spectrum from right (UKIP are probably on the right,no?)to left.I pointed out how Lib Dem supporters (in the centre) seemed to be the worst.

Only someone with considerable bias could conclude I am somehow defending anti semitism on the left by posting about it also appearing on the right.Only someone who doesn't even read my posts on this thread could think I don't think anti semitism on the left "matters".

So when I post as I did tonight:

"(I)condemn Naz Shah unconditionally for making some dodgy remarks, and shame on Corbyn for not taking a forceful position at the earliest opportunity, which no doubt he would have done had an MP made dodgy remarks about people of pakistani heritage for example, like Naz Shah."

...its as if you don't even read it before composing a critical response aimed at what you perceive as posters on the HOL from the left.

You might have more objective credibility if you could be seen to be a bit more even handed rather than tunnel visioned. The thread you started here is a valid one for debate.I look forward to seeing you instigating one and contributing to it with equal vigour when (not if) the next incidence of anti semitic sentiments emanating from someone on the right of the political spectrum emerges.

Why did you feel the need to highlight some three year old UKIP stories? The overwhelming feeling is that whilst you pay lip service to the Naz Shah situation, you and the majority of lefties on here, really don't see it as a problem in Labour and by deflecting to UKIP matters of the past, you are brushing the matter under the carpet as a normal, almost acceptable, part of political activity.

sigh......

So,in your reasoned and knowledgeable opinion ,I don't see anti semitism on the left as a problem and just pay lip service to condemning it?

Being Jewish myself ,it just conceivably might be that I take anti-semitism somewhat more seriously than you do, wherever it rears its ugly head along the political spectrum (right, centre and left), and condemn and oppose it more vigorously, but don't let facts get in the way of political prejudice,Matthew

Its debatable whether they actually are terrorists, given that the UN allows for resistance to occupation. 'Attacks' by Palestinian Terrorists seem to result in far less civilian casualties than 'Just Reprisals' from the Israeli state. Until it became a political necessity to do so, the US State Department did not regard acts of political violence in the occupied territories, or against the Israeli state as acts of terrorism.

One can only judge you on what you write.

You were very keen to bring UKIP into a thread titled 'the left and Jewish people'. As this is a (mostly) anonymous message board, people won't know your background. The manner in which this came across was that you were politically driven and looking to drag elements of other political persuasions into the debate to placate your own leftish sensibilities.

If you want a broader debate on anti semitism in politics, go ahead and create a thread. I completely agree it is unacceptable in all forms and must be addressed as such.
