When The Natural History Museum opened in 1881 they had heavy teak benches inside for people to sit on and exactly 100 years later they decided in their infinite wisdom to replace them with glass and metal benches.

My late father was an administrator at the museum and he managed to get hold of three of these benches of which I have had one in my garden for the last 40 years.

It's a real pain to keep clean and I use a jet wash and sander on it then paint it with yacht varnish.

Is that the best thing to do or would Sadolin Superdec be better?

The steak is all you really want.

Overpriced 10oz steak is not worth this back in US I used to go direct to farmers and buy highest quality meat and it would be half the price of this (I know different country but that is not the point most of the markup I expect is going to the restaurant)

in your case, you have the real deal, pukka.
Superdec is opaque, comes in all colours and is quality for its uses, but i expect youd prefer translucent / clear, so Sadolin is a good product but not superdec for you, just the regular stuff (they use it on yachts etc)
Recommend C. Brewer & sons.
otherwise trade teak oil is suitable.
sounds like a nice bit of kit Midlands.

I rarely eat steak so I am a bit out of touch when it comes to the cost, but, for that price, I would have expected the whole cow.

Add it to stupid, impractical home makeovers and ridiculous gardens on the list of ways the upper middle class rip off the plebs.

No doubt you'll be looking forward to the return of Changing Rooms next week with Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen

It does amaze me how much money people spend doing up their houses. No problem if you are wealthy or are never going to move, but you won't get much of that money back if you do.

I've just done the opposite by renovating the family bathroom as I had the bath ripped out and a walk in shower installed which by all accounts will reduce the value of the house.

As long as you don't care about the money it's OK.

I am considering having an extension built plus a new kitchen and a makeover for the wet rooms. The alternative is to move, but that is £40k in moving costs straight off. Then you might do all this work and then decide you want to move in a few years anyway.

Moving requires you to have a buyer for your house before you even look around these days. Even new builds have a very limited time frame to sell your house, and you run the risk of being gazumped by someone who can pay the full cost with cash.
