I thought ( wrongly ) that VAR would level the playing field for us smaller clubs but it has just made it more glaringly obvious what we always knew. If the big team score the refs all think normal service has resumed so doesn’t get checked properly if we score it’s wow that’s unusual there must be something wrong in that build up same with penalties. I guess we have had a few go our way in the past but I am still fuming. I just watched MOTD not even realising their second was offside. I have to try and sleep now it won’t be easy

If the famously impartial in all things Liverpool, Jamie Carragher, says it wasn't a penalty then we can be pretty sure it was a laughable decision. Described on MOTD as the 'worst decision of the season' (which let's face it is quite an achievement) it is very hard not to conclude that the referee was corrupt.

Football just lost another bit of its soul. Here in South East Asia you only have to see the EPL's and its flagship franchises' marketing exploits to realise it is a 100% commercial enterprise for the benefit of a small elite and that the actual playing side comes a poor second.

The penalty decision was only the top of the Friendly iceberg. Conor G. got a warning after 30 seconds and it took the ref almost 32 minutes to give Palace a free-kick. And as somebody pointed out, allowed play to continue after Olise's crash with the ground.
My thoughts? Just make PL more interesting with more teams in the golden race after City only drew....
PS! Still fuming and it's Monday morning here in SouthEast Asia.

VAR screwed up for sure but the more chances you get the more goals you should score. Yesterday showed we need 6 chances for one goal. That's the problem we have. The game should have been ours by the 70th minute. Blaming wrongs without looking at our own failures papers over the cracks. Bottom line if we take more of our chances we win more games.

Yes I would like to know what Fiend said to Connor in the first minute . Connor looked perplexed as if told not to do something ,Like tackle . LOL
The pen as we all saw was a complete farce .The second goal offside and every 50/50 going to the bin dippers left a very bad taste in the mouth
Im sad this morning ,not because we lost ,I was half expecting that anyway but because football lost and the game we once loved is heading for a divorce

And we still need a striker

As for the "penalty" if it takes that long then it can't possibly be a CLEAR or OBVIOUS error. Appalling from both the referee on the pitch, who was poor throughout, and the VAR official

Saw the ref touch his earpiece. Probably agreeing to disregard offside as it resulted in a goal. Sort of decision that normally takes an eternity to conclude

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then chances are, it’s a duck.

With Manchester City unexpectedly dropping two points yesterday, there was only ever going to be one outcome today. The officials bent over backwards to ensure Liverpool won, and the Premier League got the result they wanted to maintain interest in their product for at least another couple of weeks. Having a title race that was all but over by the end of January just wouldn’t have been good for business.

Friend and Pawson should be held to account, but nothing will happen. As far as the Premier League are concerned, they did exactly what was expected of them.

Spot on

If you see my post on the match thread, after what was little more than a clash of shoulders, Friend blew up for a foul and then was backing off Gallagher, wagging his finger at him and saying "be careful, be very careful" like he was going to be looking to card him at the earliest opportunity....

We had 4 or 5 decent chances in the first half.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

There are lots of references to VAR and the penalty decision not being "clear and obvious". This is true to an extent, but VAR has a second function, which is to check against "serious missed incidents", of which there are 4 types, one of which is penalty decisions. So with that definition the intervention of the VAR assistant is correct.

What is not correct is the decision of the VAR Assistant to advise Friend to take a closer look, and for Friend to overturn his decision as it was blatantly not a penalty in a million years.
