My missive for what it will be worth - zilch I suspect!

Dear Sir/Madam

I have never felt compelled to email until now.

Yesterday’s game was marred by poor decision making throughout the game by the Referee but in particular there were two issues that demand attention from yourselves.

1. Liverpool’s second goal where a Liverpool player clearly tried to head the ball when in an offside position and so is deemed to be in play and yet the goal stood – why?

That in itself is an issue but given that VAR is there to correct clear and obvious errors why did VAR not judge Firminho to be offside and so ask the Referee to change his decision and award Crystal Palace a free kick for offside.

His attempt to make contact with the ball clearly affected the decision making of the defensive players and so VAR should have intervened.

2. The Liverpool penalty that everyone knows was not a penalty and hindsight cannot be used as an excuse because VAR had – and took – the time to examine the incident.

The Liverpool player lost control of the ball before changing direction to ensure that he ran into the Goalkeeper – it is clear and obvious and on this occasion the Referee at first got the decision absolutely correct – that was until VAR asked him to look at the pitch side monitor at which point he changed his decision and awarded a penalty.

Given that they spent approximately 3 minutes not being able to decide shows that the Referee had in fact made the correct decision in the first place.

There is no other expert on football so far who has not stated that the decisions above were wrong – in particular the penalty decision.

How on earth – even with the use of technology – could your VAR referees get this so wrong?

Mistakes happen but this was an horrendous error when there was no need.

VAR should have ex-players with the Referees to ensure that common sense is sued when applying the laws of the game.

Not every contact is a foul and so not every contact in a penalty area is a penalty.

These stupid and actually, ignorant decisions will only erode the trust that everyone has in Officials and it needs to be corrected as soon as possible.

I know that I will not receive a satisfactory response but felt the need to write.

Regards

Agree with most of that. But of course VAR is not a machine, it’s another ref.
It’s faulty refereeing , and it’s about time that in its self was seriously looked at.
A petition maybe,, but it’s the big money movers that are the premier league that need to get this in order.
As for VAR, let’s face it ,it’s TV that has brought VAR into the game, VAR is here to stay, because if there was no VAR TV would constantly blow refs out of the water anyway..
I have never questioned the idea that refs are fair in the main, until recent years, and yesterday was to bad to not question How two so called top refs could get it so wrong. It’s worrying on both counts ,incompetence, or something else.

VAR does presently require the use of another Ref, but it is a toolset that should be used to aid the on field Referee and his team - and that's an important distinction. The On field Referee is the Main man. the VAR official works to aid him. At the moment, it feels as though it's the other way round.

The rules around the offside lines, active players, penalty/no penalty have become so black and white, in a world where blacks and whites rarely exist. When they've tried to improve it, they've attempted to clarify the rules to polarise the decision again and all that's happened is that it's simply gotten a confused mess. Just look at the handball rule.

To a VAR ref the term "Clear and Obvious Error" seems to mean be Pedantic and nitpick everything, crosschecking the rulebook to every movement of every player. It should be one where it spots the ref has failed to see a player pick the ball up and throw it in the goal. In all other lesser scenarios the on field refs decision should rule.

The application of the Technology has been appalling.

I am absolutely seething, still, an hour after the game.

Am I just a bad loser? Or was there something corrupt going on today? Surely Kevin Friend and Craig Pawson should be held to account and VAR should be scrutinized?

Jeeezus.

24 hours later I'm even more seething.

As someone said on another forum, there's a week left in the transfer window. A ref should be our priority now....

Don't let it get to you. I was the angriest I've been for years (decades) at a match. However, today I feel I let it all out at the game.
Friend and Lawson are cheats, end of story, cheats, cheats, cheats, cheats, cheats. I doubt they'll be at Selhurst anytime soon.

What I think is most shocking is that people are praising Jota for being so 'clever'. That just shows how warped our moral compass has become. The man's a cheat. End of.

I've never, ever done this before, but felt compelled to add my, probably insignificant, voice. My note to the FA Referees.

Dear Sirs,

Monday, 24 January 2022 17:43:31

I am a 73 year old Crystal Palace supporter and in something like 50 years of following my club this is the first time I have felt compelled to grumble formally about the standard of refereeing at a match.

But yesterday's game at Selhurst Park was marred by an extremely poor standard of officiating. We were playing one of the country's top clubs and we always knew it would be a tough match.  Despite a weak start our team rallied and it was looking like we might at least equalise.

However we were undone by a decision taken by the VAR official to overrule the referee's on field decision not to award a penalty. Mr Friend, after viewing the monitor on Mr Pawson's recommendation changed his mind and awarded a penalty. It was an appalling decision and after reading and hearing numerous comments I have not found one that agrees a penalty was the right decision. The net result was that the Palace players, understandably,  were adversely affected and the game lost it's energy. In actual fact there seems to have been a good case for booking the Liverpool player involved for diving into our keeper.

In addition to the penalty that wasn't, there was also an offside before Liverpool's second goal which went unnoticed by VAR. If Mr Friend had not spotted it then surely Mr Pawson should have picked it up. A player clearly leapt for the ball from an offside position. I have not seen or heard anyone disagree.

The standard of officiating at this game has been universally condemned by football supporters, pundits, commentators and sports writers. Even Liverpool supporters agree that the penalty decision was wrong.

I am not expecting a reply to this , but I do hope that notice is taken of the very strong adverse reaction to yesterday's officiating at the Palace v Liverpool match and that serious action is taken to ensure the standard of refereeing and VAR intervention is improved to avoid a repeat.

Regards,

A Very Disgruntled Football Supporter

It’s all the more shocking, because in this case it really wasn’t clever. It was amateurish . And that’s why the decision to give a penalty is so questionable. Nigel Warnock , says anyone that has played would know what he did. The only thing I would add is anyone who has ever played local league would know Jota, wasn’t following the ball, and turned into the goalkeeper almost in slow motion.

I think PV was trying to be his euphemistic best when he described Jota's cheating as "clever".

During this thread the word 'corrupt' has been used on many occasions.

As I was walking out of SP yesterday, I said to my mate that the penalty decision stank, and that I wouldn't be surprised if Pawson told Friend to award the penalty so that the title race could be kept interesting for the Premier League. Friend walked to the monitor 'going through the motions' knowing he was awarding a penalty before he got there.

IMO this equates to match fixing and needs investigating. However we all know that should there be an investigation it will be carried out by the PL and there will be a whitewash.

It's all bent in my opinion.
