Anytime is sad but Xmas time. I wonder if these parents knew where the kids were.

I know when we were growing up we did all manner of stupid things , not seeing the dangers, there but for the grace of god would go so many.

Probably but they may not have realised that the lake was frozen over or that their kids would try and walk on it

The park that the lake was in was in Solihull which is a fairly upmarket part of Birmingham

If water is iced over, kids are going to walk over it.

It's a terrible tragedy and the bad luck of the draw. Kids today are already over wrapped in cotton wool and it damages them in different ways.

It doesn't make them bad parents, when I was a kid we used to roam everywhere that what boys do. I think it is just a tragedy when I think of some of the stuff I got up to we were lucky that nothing went wrong.

my brother & I were always bunking over the fence to explore the railway lines.
(the old addiscombe line that no longer runs)
my dad often threatened us with the police to visit , in a desperate bid to stop us.

The youngest were two brothers plus their cousin and a friend. I can't think how the parents could ever recover from this tragedy

The line between Carshalton and Mitcham Junction ran along an embankment at the end of our garden. We made camps among the bushes and small trees and created some wonderful war games there. Under strict instructions not to go near the lines.

We did, of course, and flattening pennies was a favourite pastime. The eldest brother of a school chum was electrocuted, but it didn't deter us.

Kids will be kids eh? Thing is that, now in our 70s, we read stories about those poor kids in Solihull and feel nothing but deep sorrow for their bereft families.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Terrible shame and quite a shock that cold water killed them in that space of time. Makes me think of the times I was told not to skate on the ponds but still did.

true.
I expect we've all had close calls, without being aware of our predicament at the time.

It's also the tragedy of those seeking to rescue. In a lot of situations, like a dog falling in a river, or someone over-come by fumes in a confined space, there always seems to be an unexepectedly high number of people killed whilst attempting to rescue someone/dog.
The thought of watching someone you love dying in front of you is not an option for a lot of people. However, well intentioned.

As others have said, probably a lot of us have done similar as kids.
