I must say that when I was growing up as a child in the late sixties early seventies, the second world war seemed like ancient history, although it only ended 19 years before I was born.
The books, films and toys around back then quite often had war themes, but in a world where we were going to the Moon, it seemed very distant.
I have lived in my current house for over twenty years, and that seems like nothing.

I grew up in those times too and I thought WW2 was something quite tangible, mainly because of The documentary World At War that I watched on a Sunday. It seemed to be conveying to me the major moment that still had importance to all of us and was almost journalistic.

There was also something called 'All Our Yesterdays' which chronicled our past with archival footage.

The war was certainly a lot more tangible in the 60s when there were still bombsites around and parents and teachers had lived through it and so many older people had fought in it. There also seemed to be films on television pretty much every week. Strange to think the World Cup final was only 21 years after the war - 2003 doesn't seem that long ago.

The war was certainly a lot more tangible in the 60s when there were still bombsites around and parents and teachers had lived through it and so many older people had fought in it. There also seemed to be films on television pretty much every week.
Strange to think the World Cup final was only 21 years after the war - 2003 doesn't seem that long ago.

When you are eight, 1945 might just as well have been 1845. My grandfather fought in the war, but he never spoke about it really. The Germans were always the enemy if we played war games with friends, but the sixties and seventies were a world away from the forties and early fifties. Britain was reborn in many respects. We had Vietnam going on, but I was largely oblivious to that in sunny Croydon.

I suppose it's all about your relative age. When you are eight, 1945 might just as well have been 1845.
My grandfather fought in the war, but he never spoke about it really. The Germans were always the enemy if we played war games with friends, but the sixties and seventies were a world away from the forties and early fifties. Britain was reborn in many respects. We had Vietnam going on, but I was largely oblivious to that in sunny Croydon.

Dustin Hoffman was seduced by an Older lady in 'The Graduate', Mrs Robinson......she was actually only 6 years his senior. The first Gulf War was a deliberate clear-out of all the old surplus WWII ordinance & weaponry. many modern Motorways (or other fast roads) are sitting on top of Roman Roads. I’ve always struggled to get my head around that the Beatles spilt up the year I STARTED school, I’m now close to retiring!!

I’ve also been watching a WW2 documentary on Netflix and it suddenly dawned on me that when I was a kid and into war in a big way as in the comics and classic films that were around at the time, the real horrors of war, 60 million dead world wide was only 30 years ago. When I think 30 years back now to the 90’s it doesn’t seem much time at all
