It is a statistic of some concern, but more importantly I'm seeing a solid foundation being built in midfield from which to control the game and launch attacks. We need quicker ball and more movement up front. Olise is going to be an important player I think, more direct with the ball.

Ayew and Mateta should be benched, simple as that. Mateta is just not up to PL standard, Ayew slows down way too much with his ball-holding.

I hear Steve has a new business initiative in that pre game fanzone.
He has set up a pop up goal & if you can score more than 3 in a row you get to start up front

As part of training he has asked Ayew,Mateta,Edouard to take care of proceedings to guidance how not to do it

In our last 3 Home games we have only registered 2 attempts on target.
1 of those was the Tomkins goal against Brighton, presented to him on a plate.
This was the only goal in our last 3 home matches.

The possession in our last 3 home games is 36%, 25% and 39%.

The above games were against Liverpool, Brighton and Newcastle and there will be those who will be of the opinion that 3 draws against these teams are creditable results.

Are they not credible results then? Would you prefer 10 shots on target but no points?

I agree

Possession is a difficult stat to quantify when a lot of it can be the goalkeeper and full backs rolling the ball to each other or midfielders creating endless triangles.

Yep. The numbers support it. We have the two most fouled players in the Premier League this season. Zaha and Ayew. Eze and Olise are 16th and 18th. Having 4 in the top 18 is ridiculous, law of averages says we should have 1.

In terms of successful dribbles, Zaha is 4th. Eze is 3rd. Ayew is 15th, behind Olise in 11th.

Firstly, if we have 4 players in the top 15, we aren't moving the ball fast enough. Dribbling is going to slow us down and allow the opposition to get set. Arsenal and Newcastle are the only teams with 2 players in the top 15 so we are a huge outlier. Numbers are here: [Link]

Secondly, Ayew gets fouled way too many times for the number of dribbles he completes. Reason? He wants to be fouled. Doesn't have the confidence to take a player on, would rather slow the game down, create some friction, buy a foul.

We need more one touch, quick passing. We need less dribbling and looking for fouls against a defence we've allowed to get set.

100% agree. There are times to take a man on, but in most situations a couple of quick passes with movement beats the man. Brighton ripped us apart at times and I cant remember any of their players dribbling it.

It looks amazing when it comes off, but it often un necessary

In my view ‘shots on target’ is an overrated statistic.
It includes lame efforts which trickle into the keeper’s arms which were never going to be a goal, and ignores glaring misses which go narrowly wide or efforts that hit the bar or post.
It’s not a true indicator of how threatening or dominant a team has been.

What I am more concerned about is lack of shots and efforts on goal in general.
We don’t have a clinical finisher and probably have a better chance of scoring more goals based on having more efforts on goal.
We need to get more players in the opposition penalty area and take more shots.
You can always get deflections , own goals or miscued shots that fall nicely for one of our other players.
I’m not talking of wild, speculative efforts from impossible angles but shots when in range of the goal.
Often our players in this position pass sideways or backwards rather than taking a shot.
This is one of the reasons that Gallagher was so refreshing as he was always willing to try for goal.

Of course the aforementioned draws were creditable results and I asserted that there will be those who view them in this manner.

Mark Warburton does not look at the possession stats, just the chances created in a game.

Leicester won the PL with a mere 42% possession. They completed the league’s second-lowest percentage of passes. But they led the division in ball recoveries, they pressed early, and they countered at pace.
Our possession stats are low but we are neither a 'Pressing' side nor a team that counters with alacrity.

In general, the interpretation of statistical data is a complex process and can provide much debate between individuals.

Of course “shots on goal” is key!

Without having efforts directed at goal, you do not score (unless opposition does it for you). Simple fact! And in most cases you need several just to score once.

We did not have as much as a single shots on goal on Saturday, we only had one against Brighton thanks to a gift from their goalie, and we didn’t have any against newcomers Notts F and Fulham!

Apart from a few goals from set pieces, it is very hard to see us scoring at all for the rest of the season.

Add to this that we are covering fewer miles than any other PL-side (!) AND have fewer high intensity runs than any other PL-side (!) , and you have 1) a team in real trouble and 2) not a sign that this is about to change.

I fancy us to get just one more win this season - Bournemouth at home - but hopefully sufficent draws to stay up.
