In my view ‘shots on target’ is an overrated statistic.
It includes lame efforts which trickle into the keeper’s arms which were never going to be a goal, and ignores glaring misses which go narrowly wide or efforts that hit the bar or post.
It’s not a true indicator of how threatening or dominant a team has been.

What I am more concerned about is lack of shots and efforts on goal in general.
We don’t have a clinical finisher and probably have a better chance of scoring more goals based on having more efforts on goal.
We need to get more players in the opposition penalty area and take more shots.
You can always get deflections , own goals or miscued shots that fall nicely for one of our other players.
I’m not talking of wild, speculative efforts from impossible angles but shots when in range of the goal.
Often our players in this position pass sideways or backwards rather than taking a shot.
This is one of the reasons that Gallagher was so refreshing as he was always willing to try for goal.

The team needs some Ambrose formula

Add to this that we are covering fewer miles than any other PL-side (!) AND have fewer high intensity runs than any other PL-side (!) , and you have 1) a team in real trouble and 2) not a sign that this is about to change.

I fancy us to get just one more win this season - Bournemouth at home - but hopefully sufficent draws to stay up.

Yes, but we do dribble well!

I can see a few more wins than that but I agree it’s difficult to see winning scenarios when we appear incapable of scoring goals. To be honest I’d give one of the youngsters a go as they cannot be any worse than the pair we have. Alternatively I’d play Schlupp up front. He started pro football as an attacker and he is quick, direct and doesn’t mind shooting. It also gets him out of our midfield where we now have several alternatives.

Of course “shots on goal” is key!

Without having efforts directed at goal, you do not score (unless opposition does it for you). Simple fact! And in most cases you need several just to score once.

We did not have as much as a single shots on goal on Saturday, we only had one against Brighton thanks to a gift from their goalie, and we didn’t have any against newcomers Notts F and Fulham!

Apart from a few goals from set pieces, it is very hard to see us scoring at all for the rest of the season.

have to agree. Whilst it's good we are tighter at the back clearly if you don't score you can't win.

We don't seem to have a forward strategy so look pretty clueless in the final third.
Reminds me of the last 2 years of Roy's tenure. Keep it tight and hope to nick the odd goal or rely on individual brilliance.

This is precisely what was the narrative around me at the game.
Heard comments "Poor man's Benteke", "Return of the Roy ball" etc etc.

Remember a few years back when we had no shots on target against Watford but won 1-0? A Troy Deeney own goal from a corner.

If Carlsberg did bore draws......

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

i want your rose tinted glasses.

Whilst i agree with the general sentiment of this thread that statistics can be a little misleading, Liverpool clearly had the better of the game on Sat.

They had almost double our possession, had more than double our attempts on goals, had 4 efforts on target vs our zero and they hit the woodwork twice vs our one.

I think we need to be more adventurous and get more bodies in the penalty area when on the attack.I think there is too much criticism of Mateda and Edouard as every forward misses chances in games and in my opinion they get so few chances the pressure is on when one occurs. We have a very good defence when Anderson and Guehi are playing, through more players forward when we are attacking, if we are counter attacked trust our defence to deal with it !!

Football is a simple game made complicated, two facts that are without question are, 1 when the ball is in the oppositions half they are unlikely to score, 2 the more times you get the ball in their box the more likely you are to score.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

And if you fail to achieve any shots on target in a game you will never win that game.

Precisely. The whole object of the game is to put that round thing in the net, and we've been shyte at it since Murray was allowed to leave.
