My 12yo grandson asked a brill Q? earlier, who/which players are better? How do you give an answer to that?

Here on HOL, we have, mainly older subscribers, but we have a range of younger ones as well. Now I'm nearly 70(sorry,account's for a lot), so players I've seen are totally different to someone who is 50 & younger.

How do HOL'ers respond?

I think the 70s and 80s were more enjoyable, fitness training wasnt really done and the man in the street could associate more with them, when i was about 12 my mate and i went to watch them train on the pitch, hopping the wag, then they went straight into Bertos cafe for a fry up, the pub or snooker hall, because it was played at a much slower pace, skill seemed to shine through more, but maybe i have forgotten the crap games.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

As you say it's very difficult to answer because they virtually played a different game (offside rules, tackling was much more aggressive including from behind, mud heap pitches, heavier ball, one or no substitutes, etc) and fitness levels and the pace of the game have gone up by several levels.
My feeling is that the stars then would be stars now while the rest are probably better now. Were they more skillful? Going back over my time of watching some were but there are a lot more of them spread over the previous 55 years than there are in the current crop.

I think that the good players from yester year would still be good today ..Finney- Eastham-Edwards-Charlton- Greaves ect. Tactics and fitness, much better pitches and far greater emphasis on athletic ability and more importantly so many imported players make comparisons almost impossible.

Forward players from the past did not come across defensive players with such ability as in the game today.

to sum up great players are great players from any era but the standard of the league is a much higher quality today.

PS
Old players also played with inflated leather "rocks" which weighed a ton when wet and the lace was an obvious point of danger when you headed the bloody thing.

I always think about who’s better Vince Hilaire or Wilf Zaha? Now as an oldun Vince has always been in my all time best team. Really though I do think he should be ousted by Wilf now because he’s been doing it now in the top flight for a lot longer than Vince
BUT I just can’t do it, it will always be Vince for me, as a teenager I just can’t forget that buzz that went round the ground when he got the ball, skipping over the mud and the hatchet men trying to take him out.
Yes we get that same buzz when Wilf gets the ball and he has to put up with a lot when he’s being targeted.
But my point is, as fans it’s an age thing, I see Vince still as better because I was young and excitable and going to palace was the be all and end all back then and I’ve got better more enjoyable memories of the whole match day experience, not so much now. So this probably affects my judgement of who is actually better

The team we always have is the 1990 one - best Palace team overall. Before that the 79/80 team.
Sansom would still be good today.
I think players are probably fitter and better at a lot of the skills today as training and coaching is a lot more professional. You just don't get the really, really bad players you used to get. Or the overweight ones.
Lazy is more obvious now, however.

That 1991 team that finished 3rd will never happen again anywhere with any team, look at the money that’s spent now to win the premier league. Coppell and Noades built that team from lower league and non-league players on a shoe string. Can you imagine a team built up from players signed from Crewe, Port Vale, Barnsley, Northampton, Greenwich Borough, Dulwich Hamlet and Ten-em-bee finishing in the top four of the premier league now??

And if the stars did somehow align how long would it be before the big money clubs started picking the players off?

True, not saying our boys of 91 were average, but these days an average player has a reasonable half a season and someone snaps him up for £30 million!!

Good point. It would be a bit creepy to feel the same about a player who's 40 years younger than me as I did about Don Rogers when I was 12.
